what they are:
Chess is a strategy game that takes place on a square board called a chessboard. The objective of the game is to checkmate.
THE CHESSBOARD
The chess board has a 64 squares and each player has a set of 16 pieces, each made up of six different types of pieces. The two sets of pieces are colored differently: generally one is much lighter than the other, which is why they are called White and Black. The columns are named with a letter going from a to h starting from the white player's left, while the ranks are named with numbers from 1 to 8 always starting from the white player's position.

The checkmate and the check
Checkmate occurs when the king is under the direct threat from few or more pieces and has no possibility of escaping from they, so he would certainly be captured on the next move. Checkmate determines the conclusion of the game with the defeat of the player who suffers it. The "check" on the other hand is the attack that an opposing piece brings to the king and from which the king can be protected.
