Cave painting recreation

clay vessels

write about it - prehistoric art

Clay Vessels

Do: Make a clay pot, jar or bowl that you could imagine being discovered at an archeological site.Roll a flat piece of clay for the base and use slip (clay thinned with water) as a binding material. Roll the clay into long coils and place them on top of each other to shape your vessels. Smooth the surfact with a stick or flat stone. Allow the piece to dry slowly. When "leather hard" trim it and carve designs into the surface. When dry, you may also paint onto the design of your piece.

Materials: air dry clay clay tools containers of water Plastic cloth or other protective covering

Look: Study the various clay pots, bowls and vases from this module.

Cave Painting Recreation

Do: Create your own cave paintings using the charcoals or natural pigments. Choose a local subject matter that would be important to prehistoric people such as animals, hunting scenes or daily life. Remember that prehistoric people did not have paintbrushes and would often use their fingers and hands to create their cave paintings. So don't be afraid to use your fingers and get a little messy! (Don't forget to clean up afterwards).

Materials: Brown craft paper or large newspaper media paper Charcoal Natural pigments

Look at the cave paintings we studied in this module. Think about the techniques used and the subject matter of these cave paintings. How did prehistoric people paint and draw on the caves? What did they use?

Write About It

Choose one of the questions below. Write a one page paper, type and single spaced about the following: 1. Examine the depiction of human figures by prehistoric artists, considering the diverse media, styles, and techniques employed. Contrast two specific examples from distinct time periods and locations, analyzing how the expressive character is influenced by the relationship between style or technique. 2. Identify the prevalent motifs in cave paintings, such as those at Lascaux and Altamira. Provide a summary of the contemporary theories regarding the original meaning and purpose of these motifs.
