where is it

California borders Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, the Mexican state of Baja California to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Mountains and rivers

California is a state in the west coast of the United States. It is the third largest state in the country, covering an area of over 422.000 km square. California’s got a lot of tall mountains like Mount Whitney (the tallest) in Sierra Nevada and that stands at an elevation of 4421 meters and Mount Shasta which is 4,317 meters tall. Some of the important rivers in California include the Sacramento River, the San Joaquin River, and the Colorado River. The Sacramento River starts in the mountains of Northern California and flows for about 400 miles before emptying into the San Francisco Bay. The San Joaquin River begins in the Sierra Nevada mountains and flows for about 367 miles before reaching the San Francisco Bay. The Colorado River doesn't actually start or end in California, but it does flow through the southeastern corner of the state.

Something more

California also has diverse landscapes, including deserts, forests and beaches. Some of the famous national parks in California include Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park. All three of these parks are located in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Other notable places in California include the Golden Gate Bridge,, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is a famous landmark in Los Angeles. California is also home to several major cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego.

the history of California

California had been inhabited for more than thirteen thousand years by numerous Native American tribes, before European explorers reached it in the 16th century. Forgotten in the seventeenth century by the Spanish, it was colonized only from 1765 under the pressure of Charles III of Spain. This colonization was based on three pillars: the missions, to convert the Native Americans, the garrisons, which ensured the defense of the territory, and the Pueblos, where the settlers resided. It was during this period that the British and French became interested in California, followed by the Russians in the early 19th century. After Mexican independence, Alta California became a Mexican state, but the United States soon became interested in the region, annexing it after the Mexican-American War of 1848, giving the acquired territories the name of Mexican Cession. The gold rush brought more than two hundred thousand settlers to the new territory, and the western part became, by 1850, the 31st state of the Union. California was allied with the Northerners during the Civil War and developed rapidly through the railways. This development has continued uninterruptedly throughout the 20th century, despite the problems of water supply and pollution, which remain topical today, as well as problems related to immigration and racial tensions.

One day, if I go to Heaven, I will look around and say, “Not bad, but it's not San Francisco.”
