“Hope” is the thing with feathers BY EMILY DICKINSON “Hope” is the thing with feathers - That perches in the soul - And sings the tune without the words - And never stops - at all - And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard - And sore must be the storm - That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm - I’ve heard it in the chillest land - And on the strangest Sea - Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.

Happy Holidays Old Colony Community, We are on the cusp of a new year and we have one trimester in the books. Personally, I love Winter. The days are short, our circadian rhythms change, and it seems to offer a time to reflect. In cultures around the Globe people celebrate the coming of Winter and the New Year with Holidays that incorporate “light”; Hanukkah, Christmas, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Los Posadas, the Winter Solstice, etc.. The widespread nature of these observances, both ancient and contemporary, and found in societies everywhere, tells us something about humans’ connection to nature, specifically, to the life-giving force of the sun. So as Winter approaches the days will grow longer and soon the warmth of the sun will be here again before we know it. As we approach the Holiday Break I hope that you all enjoy your time with family & friends and form cherished memories that sustain. We recognize this is a wonderful time of year for many, but also a difficult time for others. Please reach out to the support staff here at Old Colony if we can assist families in any way. If you would like to make a donation to assist local families in need, you can reach out to my assistant Danielle Craig at dcraig@oldcolony.us or call 508-763-8011 ext. 148. Please take time to enjoy this month's Newsletter as we continue to celebrate the great students and staff we have here at Old Colony. Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! Mr. Linehan

Mr. Teixeira’s and Ms. Rodrick’s juniors celebrated the hard work they put into an integration project on The Great Gatsby. In addition to reading the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic novel, they researched various aspects of the Jazz Age, peer-evaluated their projects, and enjoyed Roaring Twenties-themed decorations, fashion, and food. Cosmetology students displayed hairstyles from the era and our Culinary Arts students played the roles of chefs and servers. Many students enjoyed dressing the part in bowler hats and flapper dresses!

Mr. Craig’s freshman classes participated in Algebra Escape Rooms. Each group’s room contained a scroll with the beginning of a mysterious tale and math problems that unlocked clues to the outcome of the story. Students collaborated on solutions through productive conversations about how to perform the math calculations and the meaning of each clue. The students displayed creative thinking and lots of enthusiasm.

Just a reminder to take time to review the expectations and requirements for each vocational program, included in the Exploratory Program Overview, prior to entering each exploratory program session in their rotation. These expectations and requirements will have an impact on the student’s exploratory grade, which could affect the student’s ultimate vocational program assignment. 9th-grade students will be completing their Exploratory Program at the end of this cycle. We hope that they've enjoyed their introduction to the Vocational-Technical Programs! Prior to leaving for the December break, their Guidance Counselor met with them to explain how to complete and return the Vocational-Technical Selection Packet. Program placement will take place in January, but before this can happen they are asked to be reflective on their experience and make their selections true to who they are and want to be. Students have been asked to think back through all of the vocational programs that they've explored and ask themselves if the program aligns with their skills, personal strengths, and interests? Is it something that they like to do? Does this align with their career or future goals?

On November 22nd, Umass Dartmouth College of Engineering (UMD) faculty and students visited Old Colony and discussed post-secondary opportunities available at their university. Dr. Paul Gendron and four OC Electronics Engineering Technology graduates shared details of the Electrical/Computer Engineering programs. The alumni also shared their personal experiences transitioning from Old Colony to UMass Dartmouth. Much of the discussion centered around the support group that our graduates formed during their time there. Not only do they help each other, but they have also welcomed new students into the group to ease the transition from high school to college. Pictured from left to right: EET Instructor Rick Dutra, EET Graduates Ryan Picewick, Austin DeSousa, Steve Cabral, and Isaiah Ortiz, and (far right) Dr. Paul Gendron. Austin is graduating this year with his degree in Electrical Engineering. He has accepted a job offer at the Federal Aviation Administration and will begin his engineering career immediately upon graduation. Congratulations to Austin and all of our alumni for their amazing success in a very, very challenging career pathway.
