“Hope” is the thing with feathers
BY EMILY DICKINSON
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

Happy Holidays Old Colony Community,
We are on the cusp of a new year and we have one trimester in the books. Personally, I love Winter. The days are short, our circadian rhythms change, and it seems to offer a time to reflect. In cultures around the Globe people celebrate the coming of Winter and the New Year with Holidays that incorporate “light”; Hanukkah, Christmas, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Los Posadas, the Winter Solstice, etc.. The widespread nature of these observances, both ancient and contemporary, and found in societies everywhere, tells us something about humans’ connection to nature, specifically, to the life-giving force of the sun. So as Winter approaches the days will grow longer and soon the warmth of the sun will be here again before we know it.
As we approach the Holiday Break I hope that you all enjoy your time with family & friends and form cherished memories that sustain. We recognize this is a wonderful time of year for many, but also a difficult time for others. Please reach out to the support staff here at Old Colony if we can assist families in any way. If you would like to make a donation to assist local families in need, you can reach out to my assistant Danielle Craig at dcraig@oldcolony.us or call 508-763-8011 ext. 148. Please take time to enjoy this month's Newsletter as we continue to celebrate the great students and staff we have here at Old Colony.
Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
Mr. Linehan
