Belgium was the first country ever to hold the presidency. The original organisation EEC (European Economic Community), later the European Union, was founded in 1957. The six original member states Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, France and Belgium together formed an organisation that would avoid war between these countries.
They decided together to devise a rotating system to chair the EEC Council. In alphabetical order, they would each take turns chairing it.The rule ensured that Belgium was first on the list. As Germany was still devided in two sides, Belgium held this presidency with West-Gemany.

From January 2024 Belgium is holding the presidency again. In a trio with Spain and Hungary Belgium has the honour to hold the presidency during the election of 2024. A good preparation for this event will be very important.
