Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Explosion

By Gabby Gaido

what is Chernobyl and where is it?

Chernobyl was one of the many power plants in the soviet union that produced nuclear weapons and bombs.in 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Soviet Union of Pryp'yat, Ukraine, Workers shut down the reactor’s power-regulating system and its emergency safety systems, and they withdrew most of the control rods from its core while allowing the reactor to continue running at 7 percent power. Several explosions triggered a large fireball and blew off the heavy steel and concrete lid of the reactor. This and the ensuing fire in the graphite reactor core released large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere, where it was carried great distances by air currents.

How did they control it

how much radiation was released

It was not sure on how much radiation was released but was around 50-185 million radionuclides (which is several times more radiation than Hirosima, the bombing of japan)

sand and boron were used to control and take down the radiation by being carried in helicopters and dropping down in the middle where the core is. But the core is the point of the mass amount of power so it would corrupt the engines causing them to fall immediately while cutting off radio communications

how did it effect the enviroment and the people

the radiation from the fall-out would cause serious cases of burns, scars, cancer, or even death in just a few days or a few hours. As this is bad for the people living there, the soviet goverment took so long to recognize the situation and it took weeks until everyone was evacuated. The area, soil, and the air were all covered in smoke or a deadly area for anyone to stay.
