why note -taking ? and active learning

It helps in active learning it keeps us engaged with the material and information. Processes information : both note – taking and active learning involve processing information actively. It builds the habit of reflection: note taking encourages reflection on the material. Students often revisit and review their notes, leading to a deeper understanding of the content. It can be personalised depending on the learning style of the individual. Active learning emphasizes the application of knowledge to real world scenarios .

Note taking

facts

  • Memory reinforcement refers to the process of strengthening and solidifying memories, making them more durable and easier to recall over time.
  • It involves actively engaging with information in ways that enhance retention and retrieval.
  • Effective memory reinforcement is crucial for long-term learning and the ability to apply acquired knowledge
  • Hand-written notes are better then type-notes, this is because the effort required to take notes helps form new pathways in the brain and encode the information in a way that stores it better in your long term memory
  • Quantity over quality :evidence shows that the more notes you take, the more information you tend to remember later. Be generous in the way you take notes.

Our brain is prepared to consume visual content. And it makes sense: 90% of the information we process comes throughour sight. That's why visual content helps facilitate faster learning in many cases.

memory reinforcement

Notes provide a structured and organized representation of information. which builds mental connections that aid memoray consolation .

Organization and structure

  • Over-reliance: Some students may become overly dependent on their notes, hindering the development of critical thinking skills.

ORGANIZATION

notes provide a structured overview, aiding in the organization of information for better comprehension

REFERENCE

ACTIVE LEARNING

Note- taking encouragings students to participate actively in class , promoting better understanding

how to take notes.

  • Read or listen with a purpose. Identify the main topic, question, or argument of the source, and how it relates to your own topic or assignment. - Use a note-taking system that helps you to organise, compare, and question the information from different sources. For example, you can use a three-column system, where you write the source, the notes, and your comments in separate columns.
  • - Use your own words to summarise or paraphrase the main points of the source, and include direct quotations only when necessary.
  • Make sure you use quotation marks and page numbers for all quotations, and cite the source according to the referencing style required by your unit. - Write down your thoughts and comments about the information you have read or heard. You can comment on the strengths, weaknesses, assumptions, implications, or gaps of the source, and how it supports or challenges your own perspective or argument.
  • - Review your notes regularly and use them to write your assignments or prepare for exams.
  • Make sure you demonstrate your critical analysis in your assessments, and provide evidence and references to support your claims.
