Yahi

Introduction

Yahi was a Native American tribe that came from the Yana people, another bigger tribe. They lived in the northern part of California, in the United States. The Yahi population had a decline in the 19th centuary, from between 200 and 300 people to less than 100 by the 20th centuary.

Facts

The Yahi tribe spoke the Hokan language, but nowadays, it has limited linguistic records. They were skilled hunters and gatherers, and they used to put on masks in their hunts. Also, the last known member from this tribe was Ishi, who had to escape and finally emerged in 1911.

History

When the colonizers arrived, they would raid the tribe's cabins, invide and occupy their space, kill its members... and those are the most important reasons of their decline, and how the only survivor was Ishi by the 20th centuary. Ishi was captured from the colonizers but was able to escape from them and lived with another tribes. Then, in 1911 he finally emerged and he provided valuable information about the Yahi culture and language, he was really important.

Sacred animals

In the Yahi, they had two sacred animals, the California condor and the spotted owl and they both were really important for their cultural beliefs. However, all their symbols were lost and we have no clue of them due to the declive.
