When the next word start with a CONSONANT SOUND use A
Here are some examples: a banana a cat a dragon a flower a garden a jar a koala

When the next word start with a VOWEL SOUND use AN
Here are some examples: an apple an egg an insect an orange an umbrella an actor
The SOUND OF THE LETTER IS IMPORTANT

Here are some examples: a house BUT an hour (the H at the beggining of hour is silent) an uncle BUT a university (the U at the beginning of university sounds like YOU)
