Introduccion

The oceans are so vast and deep, but currently there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans, and every minute, a dump-truck load of plastic goes into the oceans, sullying beaches, hurting wildlife, and contaminating our food supply.

How does plastic affect the sea?

Main consequences

  • 500 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually.
  • Many of them are single-use plastics
  • Of all the plastic:

Plastic in the deepest parts of the sea

  • According to UN the ocean receives eight million tons of plastic yearly.
  • Greenpeace reports that floating plastic accounts for only 15% of the total, while 85% remains hidden under water.
  • At the deepest point on the planet, known as the Challenger Deep, it was found a plastic bag.

Microplastic

High density polyethylene most common plastic Plastic waste can take from 20 to 500 years to decomposeIt gets smaller and smaller turning into microplastic particlesMicroplastics present in the food chain

Plastic Islands

  • Threaten to marin life
  • Ocean currents
  • Contribute to climate change
  • 1997
  • urgent solution

Ocean clean up

  • Organizations are actively working on innovative solutions to address ocean plastic pollution.
  • Boyan founded "The Ocean Cleanup" organization
  • The organization raised $2 million with support and developed System 001,
  • It is a 600-meter-long, U-shaped barrier, three meters deep, ensuring effective plastic capture near the surface.

Role of the consumer

1. Reducing the consumption of plastic 2. Supporting organisations 3. Contributing to spreading awareness 4. Participating in clean-up days at sea 5. Notifying the authorities 6. Swaping plastic bags for reusable bags. 7. Buying food in bulk and avoiding products wrapped in plastic. 8. Opting for metal or glass food containers.

CONCLUSION

THANK YOU!

  • A world invaded by plastic
  • Consequences on marine life
  • Millions in losses and investments
  • More plastic than fish in the ocean
