Surrounding Regions
The bordering city of Stellenbosch has taken measures in helping Cape Town and the Western Cape in aiding the preservation of water. The City has contributed to giving alternate ways to reduce water usage and such methods are as follow: -Two large purification plants have been purchased to support campus water systems -Lenetus Fields have been irrigated until lawns are establish -borehole water is only permitted for pools and hockey fields -Ertjieskloof and Welgevallen, two dams, have newly augmented quotas
What is being done?
Drastic measures were put in place to regain water levels to what is needed. Mandated short showers, flushing when it is only needed, and preventing watering for gardening have been common measures to limit the use of water due to the severe lack thereof.
Impact
from 2013 2018, Cape Town was faced with one of the worst droughts in it's history. The drought was so bad the City was at the point of running out of water. The cause of the drought was a lack of rainfall for 3 straight years. Due to the lack of water, citizens were heavily limited to how much water could be used(7 gallons a day). Cape Town is the first city in the world to ever run out of drinking water.
