The Bluffs

On this hike back to Camp Hero why not look at the cliffs, here you can see many different types of birds and if you come and the right time even dolfins. Be careful of the edge, that wont end well. But back to Camp Hero. People see this State park as some ruins, old buildings, dirty forest paths. But now theres rhyme and reason. Every ruin here had a play wether it was defence, intel, or even deception. Camp Hero is a masterful military base in an open area surrounded by three sides by water yet they remained hidden and functional. Now the unneded base gets taken back by nature. Lets look right back in the center of this amazing State park.

Battery 113

Battery 113 is very similar to Battery 112, placed in the sides of a hill with foliage and rocky bluffs used to protect the guns from the line of sight from the water. Once again this bunker was declared inactive in 1945 and salvaged in 1948.

But with two huge guns and radar tower there had to be soldiers, miliary, and scientists. Where did they stay? With all these buildings, this starts to be suspicouse, expecially to enimies. Lets take a walk to the barracks.

Barracks

With all those soldiers (600 enlitsted men and 37 officers) stationed in Camp Hero they needed a place to stay and many building made at Camp Hero were used as such. Dining halls, gymnasiums, beds, firehouses, and even recreational buildings like a bowling alley! But with all of

these buildings wouldn't it seem a bit suspicouse or strange. But with every new location theres just another building or artifact for enemies to get concerned about and maybe even see Camp Hero as a sign of hostility and a need to attack. Therefore Camp Hero made many of these buildings into their very own mock town to deter suspicion and pretent to be a little fishing town. Lets take a walk.

Radar Tower

Starting off our jurney of Camp Hero we will be taking a look at the main abandoned building, the Radar Tower. Established in 1951 this tower served in the Cold War. This radar served with the airforce and was capible of detecting aircraft entering the nearby airspace and was a big early warning if enemy planes and other such craft were nearby. In 1981 the radar tower was diactivated but left as a reminder of the war, and an amazing ruin towering amungst the park

Lighthouse

The Lighthouse at Montauk Point was built in 1792, commissioned by George Washington and is the 4th oldest lighthouse in the nation. At this link there is a virtual tour aswell as a video of someone waljin to the top. And on the horrizon the radar tower can be spotted.

Overall its a great place to visit. So much history, sights, ruins, and one amazing view. Why not check out the bluffs for the final strech of the hike.

Mock Town

As we get to the mock town you may notice that many of the buildings look like churches, stores, and houses. They dont look like military buildings and this was perfect to put Camp Hero undercover. Disguised as an old fishing village Camp Hero kept all its soldiers and military needs secret and gave it an innocent look to those who may have been watching. Out of all the buildings, radar ower, batteries, and more the mock town was one of the most helpful additions from the start of Camp Hero and to the end (1942-1982).

Battery 112

Now as our journy continues as we go back in time to when Battery 112 was made to protect against the Long Island Sound (North shore) and the Atlantic Ocean (East and South shore). Equipted with two 16" Markll-M1 guns mounted on M4 Carriges and accepted into service in 1944 to protect Camp Hero from submarines and ships durring WWll. But with WWll ending in 1945 the guns wouldnt be needed anymore. Therefore, Battery 112 was declared inactive in 1947 and salvaged in 1948 leaving a fun ruin to walk up to in the dead of night. Lets take walk over to Battery 113.
