SUGGEST, RECOMMEND AND ADVISE

SUGGEST

  1. Suggest + noun phrase: Can you suggest a good restaurant to have dinner tonight?
However, if we need to say the person who receives the suggestion, we need to use + to construction: Can you suggest a good restaurant to me to have dinner tonight? OR My teacher suggested an exam to me which I could take at the end of the year.
  1. Suggest + that clause: If you want to arrive on time, I suggest that you leave now.
Also, when we suggest in the past we can use should in the that clause: The doctor suggested that I should reduce the amount of sugar intake.

SUGGEST

3. Suggest + vb-ing: normally used when we mention the action but not the person who will do it because it is implicit in the context. We suggest making alternative plans with friends that day far away from the shopping mall.

ADVISE

  1. Advise somebody + to do something: My friends advise me to take it easy when I am stressed with exams.OR Police are advising people to stay at home.
  2. Advise (somebody) + on/about +doing something: She advised the government on environmental issues/ about taking measure to help the environment.
  3. Advise (somebody) + against + doing something: The Foreign office is advising against travelling to the country OR The Foreign office is advising the population against travelling to the country.
  4. It is advised that + clause: It is strongly advised that you take out insurance.

RECOMMEND

  1. Recommend + something to somebody: I recommend this website to all my friends who are looking for some bargains.
  2. Recommend + doing something: I recommend waiting to purchase for the electronic devices until the sales.
  3. Recommend somebody to do something: We recommend you to book the flight tickets in advance.
  4. Recommend + that clause: I recommend that (should) you see a psychologist.
  5. It is strongly recommended that clause: It is strongly recommended that the passengers remain on their seat at all times.
