- Jesus | Matthew 5:38-42
"You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."

This goes beyond typical definitions of mutuality and interdependence.By a lot.

These ideas are very often associated with Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, and it must be stated: when humans deal with humans in contexts that are basically, you know, human - they're much better than the often violent, harmful, and tragic ways that we see humans interact. The work of nonviolent protesters is admirable.

- Something that doesn't expect the recipient to do...anything.
- Something without putting condition on the person receiving it.
- Something done not in order to transform or change.
- Something done in a such a way the other will clearly benefit.
- Something you do without giving up control to the person you do it for. (This is where power, if it exists at all, changes.) They cannot stop you from doing this for them. They are...powerless.
A Different agenda
What King & Gandhi did, however, was resistance. It sought to stop power. Jesus, however, gives a different recommendation. To be clear, Jesus doesn't say "do nothing" in the face of harmful acts of dominance. He says we are to do something.

Jesus hits different.
Talk it out a little bit with your group. Imagine that a group of Christians chose to operate as Jesus suggests. Use the questions in the "Discuss" tab to guide your conversation.
