Summary
- Who was Diophantus
- What is he know for ?
- All the books he wrote
- His other works
- An introduction to Diophantine Equations
Who was diophantus ?
- He died somewhere around 248 AD
- He was a greek mathematician from Alexandria, Egypt.
- He is considered the father of Algebra, polynomials and integers.
-He was born sometime between 201 or 215 AD.
What is he know for ?
- He created a series of books called Arithmetica.
- Only 6 survive to this day.
- 1st to recognize fractions as numbers.
- Large influence in history
All the books he wrote :
- His most famous book is the Aritmetica
- He also wrote the Porisms, this book is lost
- It is said that he also wrote things on polygonal numbers
His other works
- His research lead to many advances in number theory
- He created Diophantine approximation wich has to do with the approximation of real and rational numbers.
- He gave names of the power up to n6
- He also gave his name at Diophantine equations.
AN introduction to diophantine equations
- 2 or more unknow with only positive integer solution
- He considered two types of problems : linear and exponential equations
- The simplest linear equation is : ax + by = c , where a, b and c are integers
- An example of diophantine exponential equation is an + bm = ck
