RACISM
Racism is a belief that some races are inherently superior or inferior to others, often leading to discrimination or prejudice based on someone's race or ethnicity. It can manifest in various forms, including systemic, institutional, and individual levels.
To combat racism, collective efforts are essential. Strategies involve promoting cultural understanding through education, fostering open dialogues to challenge stereotypes, implementing anti-discrimination laws, enhancing diversity and inclusion, supporting community initiatives for equality, urging individuals to reflect on and challenge biases, and advocating for fair representation in media. These measures collectively work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society.
GENDER VIOLENCE
Gender-based violence is one of the most prominent human rights violations in all societies. It encompasses abusive acts against a person's will. It can include sexual, physical, mental and economic harm inflicted in public or private. Moreover, it includes threats of violence and manipulation. Both women and men experience gender-based violence, but the majority of victims are women and girls. It affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. However, this rate is higher in emergency, conflict and crisis situations, where vulnerability and risks increase.
- Strengthen the prevention of abuse of women by improving knowledge of the problem.
- Listen and believe the victims, we must ensure that she has the safe space she needs to speak up and be heard.
- Donate to local organizations that help women.
HOMOPHOBIA
Homophobia is the irrational rejection and hatred of homosexuality that leads to violence and discrimination against individuals with this sexual orientation. These negative, prejudiced and discriminatory attitudes are a criminal offence under the laws of many countries around the world. Homophobia encourages antisocial behaviour, such as bullying in schools and other social spaces, discrimination at work and situations of physical and verbal violence. In LGBT individuals it can generate situations of stress, depression, anguish, and can lead to suicidal behaviour. Some examples of homophobic situations could be: - When someone is made fun of for wearing very brightly coloured or "unmanly" clothes. Conversely, when a girl dresses in a very "masculine" way. - Jokes about homosexuals - Repressing one's own or another person's feelings for fear of appearing effeminate.
To help prevent homophobic behaviour we should: - Not use offensive language to describe LGBTQ people. - Not believe stereotypes about LGBTQ people. - Be an advocate for the LGBTQ community, regardless of your own sexual orientation.
INEQUALITY
Gender inequality is a social phenomenon in which there is discrimination between people on the basis of their gender. It occurs when one group has privileges over the other, violating women's rights. Despite the great advances made by many feminists, even today there are still men who think that women are only good for housework and that they cannot take care of such important things as health or mechanics. In many countries today, women have less access to basic social services than men, and the wage gap shows that women earn less money than men for the same work.
Some solutions to gender inequality could be:
- Fund women's organisations.
- Protect women's health.
- Invest in care work.
- Support women's leadership.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change is the long-term change in temperatures and weather conditions. It is caused by human action, mainly the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. The use of fossil fuels generates greenhouse gas emissions that create a blanket around the planet, trapping the sun's heat and raising temperatures. The Earth's average temperature is currently 1.1°C warmer than it was at the end of the 19th century (before the industrial revolution).Other consequences include intense droughts, severe fires, rising in sea levels, floods and the melting of the poles.
- Reduce the use of plastics, since they take time to decompose and they reach the ocean, damaging wildlife.
- Protection of forests and oceans because they both absorb huge amounts of carbon. This helps to keep our climate stable.
- And other methods such as using public or electric transport, changing our energy sources for renewable energies...
