LA ANTÁRTIDA
EL CONTINENTE CONGELADO
Ubicación Geográfica:
La Antártida es el continente más austral de la Tierra, situado en el Polo Sur. Se extiende sobre una superficie de aproximadamente 14 millones de kilómetros cuadrados, convirtiéndolo en el quinto continente más grande.
Clima Extremo:
La Antártida es el lugar más frío del planeta, con temperaturas que pueden descender a -80 grados Celsius. Es también el desierto más grande del mundo, con una precipitación anual promedio de solo 2 pulgadas (50 mm) en forma de nieve.
Reserva de Agua Dulce
La Antártida alberga alrededor del 60% del agua dulce de la Tierra, almacenada en forma de hielo. Si todo el hielo de la Antártida se derritiera, contribuiría a un aumento en el nivel del mar de aproximadamente 60 metros.
Vida Silvestre Única
A pesar de las condiciones extremas, la Antártida alberga una sorprendente diversidad de vida, como pingüinos, focas y diversas especies de aves marinas. El Océano Antártico que rodea el continente es hogar de una variedad de vida marina única, incluyendo ballenas y krill, la base de la cadena alimentaria antártica.
