  • A raíz de sus actuaciones en la capital de Illinois, Fletcher Henderson lo invitó a Nueva York en 1924 para tocar en su big band, con la cual grabó algunos discos que pusieron de manifiesto la creatividad y originalidad del músico.
  • Su virtuosismo en la improvisación ejerció una gran influencia en los músicos de jazz neoyorquinos.
  • En 1925 regresó a Chicago y fundó su propio grupo, un quinteto (The Hot Five) que posteriormente se transformó en septeto (The Hot Seven), con el cual se convirtió en uno de los músicos de jazz más reputados mundialmente y logró que en la década de 1920 Chicago compartiera la capitalidad mundial del jazz con Nueva York, ciudad a la que regresó a finales de esa misma década, entre otros motivos, para afianzar su carrera cinematográfica.
  • Debutó en el cine con la aparición en la película Ex-flame (1930).
  • En 1932 realizó una exitosa gira por el Reino Unido, que repetiría al año siguiente, aunque en esta ocasión incluyó además en su itinerario Dinamarca, Noruega y Holanda.
  • En 1936 su popularidad era tal que decidió publicar una autobiografía, que tituló Swing that music.
  • En 1939 participó en la realización de Swingin' the dream, una versión de El sueño de una noche de verano de William Shakespeare en clave de jazz.
  • Durante la década de 1950 dio conciertos en buena parte del mundo y efectuó giras por África, Australia y Japón.
