Introduction

This lesson plan is developed by the Interactive Research Methods Lab's team at Kennesaw State University. The aim of the lesson plan is to help middle school students to understand the process of developing a research design and literature review for their projects completed in the Science Academy with Ms. Natalie West. The proposed activities within the lesson plan are in alignment with the mission of the GSEF: encouraging all Georgia's teachers and school districts to incorporate active science and engineering research into their classrooms. This allows students the opportunity to develop a love for STEM research, and learn to attack and solve these problems within the framework of organized, logical thought, careful research, and a detailed analysis of facts. The lesson was implemented in the Interactive Research Methods Lab (IRML) on 12/12/2023 from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm. The session was lead by Drs. Tiffany Post and Jim Wright.

This lesson plan will help high school students reach a deep understanding of the key elements that should be included in sound research designs. To do so, this unit will help them identify the nine steps proposed by the Hopscotch Model (Jorrín-Abellán, 2016, 2019) to develop well-informed research designs. To facilitate the process, students will be provided with an example of the nine steps extracted from a published study (An, 2022) that will be read prior to the session in the Interactive Research Methods Lab.

The proposed activities will help students develop their research skills. These include logic, and problem-solving skills (Bauer & Bennett, 2003) and experimental skills like design, data collection, data analysis, understanding of limitations, and research ethics (John & Creighton, 2012; Russell, Hancock, & McCullough, 2007). Students also learn how to seek out and consume the relevant literature and learn the disciplinary language (Bauer & Bennett, 2003).

Step 0: Prior to the face-to-face session in the IRML, share with students the following article: Academic Competitions in Science: What Are the Rewards for Students? Academic Competitions in Science. - EBSCO Step 1: Introduction and Overview The IRML will be introduced to students. A team member of the lab will describe its structure based on the first 4 steps proposed by Hopscotch using the article as an example. The IRML team member will demonstrate how to use the ipads to access the different resources that will be used in the session. (10') Step 2: Demonstration of how to use the iPad to interact with the resourcesWe will model how to use Hopscotch by applying the first 4 to 5 steps in the model to identify the key elements of the article students have already read. The second column in Appendix A, will be used to explain how the Hopscotch Model could be used to identify the key elements in the study by (Abernathy & Vineyard, 2001). (20')Step 3: Hands-on Workshop timeStudents will analyze their own research papers using the first 4 to 5 steps in the model. They may also look up additional literature as a result of their self reflection. Students not participating in the Science Fair may work in pairs to look up research regarding their own topics of interests. (60') Participating students will collaboratively use the the following resources to identify relevant research: ERICConsensus Galileo In this stage, students may use the table provided in the Appendix A to fill out the third column of the table by describing in their own words the key elements that need to be considered to generate a solid research design for their study. Students could refer to the second column, in which the research design used in the previously read article has been unpacked.

Step 4: Overview of final steps of HopscotchWe will give students an overview of the final steps in the Hopscotch Model by applying the following 3 to 4 steps in the model to identify the key elements of the research article to the article and then to their own research. (60')
