OBJECTIVES

Key words

WHY ARE THERE DIFFERENT CLIMATES ON EARTH?

Climate is the characteristic state of the atmosphere in a specific area over a long period of time. The elements fo describing the climate of an area are temperature and precipitation.

Different parts of the world have different climates because the temperature and precipitation of a place are influenced by many factors:

proximity to the sea

altitude

Distance from the equator

CLIMATES OF SPAIN

Spain has four types of climate: Mediterranean, oceanic, mountain and subtropical.

The factors that explain the different climates in our country are:

CLIMATE GRAPHS

Distance from the equator

proximity to the sea

altitude

Complete the chart with the differents types of climates along the unit.

MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE

Most of Spain has a Mediterranean climate with three different variations. All Mediterranean climates have these common characteristics:

  • Low total annual precipitation. It rain less than 600 l/m2 per year.
  • Summer drought. Hot, dry summers with little precipitation.

TYPICAL MEDITERRANEAN

INLAND MEDITERRANEAN

DRY MEDITERRANEAN

Vegetation

ACTIVITY 1: Answer in your notebook. 1. Look at the map and answer: Which areas have a typical Mediterranean climate?, which have inland Mediterranean climate? and which areas have dry Mediterranean climate? Classify them.

SUBTROPICAL CLIMATE

The Islas Canarias is the only region of Spain that has a subtropical climate. The islands are located near the Tropic of Cancer, closer to the hot zone.

Vegetation

OCEANIC CLIMATE

The oceanic climate is found in the north of the Peninsula Iberica, near the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea.

Vegetation

mountain CLIMATE

As altitude increases, temperatures decrease, and there is more precipitation than at lower altitudes. This is the climate we find in the highest regions.

ACTIVITY 1: Look at the picture and anwer the questions.

ACTIVITY 2: Look up the translation of these words: - oak - fir tree - holm - pine - pasture

Vegetation

GEO LAB- Impacts of climate change

ACTIVITY 1. Watch the video and classify these concepts into causes and effects of climate change.

ACTIVITY 2. Look at the map and discuss with your team. - Which areas are affected by increasing temperatures? - By how much has the temperature increased in your area? 3. Complete the chart in your notebook using the expressions below:

Mountain vegetation

Vegetation varies depending on the altitude: - At lower altitudes, trees grow, such us oaks. - Higher up in the mountain, there are fir trees and shurbs. - Close to the peaks, there are natural meadows. - At the highest altitude, there is little vegetation.

Various factors influence the type of vegetation found in mountain areas. Apart from the altitude, vegetation varies depending on: - Orientation: North-facing slopes are colder because they receive less sunlight than south-facing slopes. - Location: mountain ranges in the north have different vegetation from those in the south.

Proximity to the sea

Coastal areas have milder temperatures than inland areas because of sea breezes. These prevent extreme temperatures.

ACTIVITY 1: Look at the picture and answer: - Which trees are common to both mountain ranges? - Are they the same height and on slopes that face the same direction?

Altitude

Altitude affects temperature and precipitation.

Oceanic vegetation

The typical vegetation is the Atlantic forest. These forests include mainly deciduous trees like oak and chestnut. Ferns, mosses and heather are common. There are also fields. These are large areas of grass, where cows and sheep graze.

Climate graphs

A climate graph shows the temperature and precipitation in a particular area throughout the year.

Subtropical vegetation

The Islas Canarias have many endemic species of plants. They do not grow anywhere else in the world. Vegetation varies depending on altitude and humidity.

Distance from the Equator

There are five climate zones depending on how the Sun´s rays reach the Earth. Not all the Earth receives an equal amount of heat from the Sun. This is because of the tilt of the Earth´s axis.

  • Location: around the North Pole and the South Pole.
  • Sun´s rays: they reach the Earth indirectly all year round. Temperatures are always low.

Two cold zones

  • Location: regions closer to the Equator.
  • Sun´s rays: they reach the Earth directly in this zone. Temperatures are always high.

One hot zone

  • Location: between the Artic and Antartic circles and the tropocs of Cancer and Capricorn.
  • Sun´s rays: they reach the Earth less directly here than in the hot zone. Temperatures change every season.

Two temperate zones

Mediterranean vegetation

Plants grow in different places depending on the climate. This vegetation is characteristic of areas with a Mediterranean climate:

  • Mediterranean forest: holm, oak, cork oak, pine trees.
  • Fan palm and esparto grass (driest areas).
  • Shrubs have replaced forest in some areas.
