Birth of skateboarding
It arose as something spontaneous from several people at the same time. It was the surfers in the California area who, in order to pass the time on wave-free days, decided to attach four roller skate wheels to a simple wooden board and "play" at surfing the asphalt. Obviously, these skateboards were very rudimentary. They used metal wheels and were only dedicated to sliding downhill through the streets emulating the movements of surfing.
The Expansion of Street Skateboarding
In the 90s, skateboarding's popularity dropped quite a bit again. Skating was very much associated with the underground style, and skateboarders didn't have a very good reputation. The Vert fell for years almost into oblivion and, on the other hand, the street developed a lot. Young people from all over the world stormed the streets and took advantage of any obstacle in the street furniture to do their tricks. The material evolved into practically the skateboarding we know today.
The Skateboarding Revolution
Frank Nasworthy invented urethane wheels in 1973 and founded the company Cadilla Wheels. These wheels made many people interested in skateboarding again and it was practiced more regularly. Then came the year 75 in a slalom championship and freestyle taught a way of skating, which had never been seen before and showed what skateboarding could become. From that day on, skateboarding was no longer seen as a fringe hobby and began to be taken seriously. On that date, another historic moment occurred. Alan Gelfand, invented the Ollie. And that trick revolutionized skateboarding forever, opening up a range of infinite possibilities.
Growth of skateboarding
In the 60's the popularity of skateboarding began to grow and the first companies specialized in manufacturing skates appeared. The first competitions begin to take place. Those were years when the queen disciplines were slalom and freestyle, which resembled a kind of dance with the board on your feet.
Birth of Modern Skateboarding
- The 80s saw the birth of Modern Skateboarding as we know it today. We began to evolve a lot in terms of material and tricks. We can say that the 80s were one of the golden ages of skating.
- It was the decade in which mythical brands such as Powell Peralta, Vision, Santa Cruz, Independent, etc emerged
The Fall of Skateboarding
Around the year 65, this skate fashion suddenly fell and it seemed that skateboarding would remain as something residual and that it would not go any further. The few businesses that were there closed and, again, there was no skate gear to buy. People, despite the difficulties, continued to skate on their own. They went back to the beginning and each made their own skateboard as best they could. Those were years when clay wheels were used... very dangerous and difficult to control.
The consolidation of Skateboarding
In the late 90s, the first celebration of the X-Games took place. This fact was a great media boost for the world of skateboarding, and put it in front of large audiences. From then on, although it has never lost its essence, it became known as a sports practice and a spectacle. Televisions, big brands, console games, etc., were interested in Skateboarding as a business and as a sport and the skate industry grew a lot at all levels.
