WHAT IS IT?
DIAGNOSTIC.
Autism spectrum disorders are a group of neurological and developmental disorders that affect the way people interact with others, communicate, learn and behave. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is known as a "developmental disorder" because symptoms usually appear during the first two years of life.
Diagnosing ASDs can be difficult because there is no medical test, such as a blood test, to diagnose them. To make a diagnosis, doctors evaluate a child's behavior and development. ASDs can sometimes be detected at 18 months of age or earlier. By age two, a diagnosis from an experienced professional can be considered reliable. However, many children do not receive a definitive diagnosis until they are older. Some people do not receive a diagnosis until they are adolescents or adults. This delay means that some people with ASD may not get the early help they need.
