In this section you need to compare the average values found within the nutrional programme to recommended intake values provided by the government or other governing body.

In this section you need to know the RDA's for the following:

  • Kcal
  • Carbs
  • Fats
  • Proteins
  • BMI

Step 1

Calculation

Your first step for activity 1 should always be your calculations. You need these to be able to effectively analyse the nutrional programme. It also provides us with our initial comparisons (Step 2).

For your calculations you need to know:

  • BMR
  • BMI
  • TER

BMR

BASAL METABOLIC RATE

This calculation gives us our baseline calorie intake needed to function at rest. This tells us what we need to maintain breathing, keeping warm and other basic functions

BMR for men = 66.5 + (13.75 x weight in kg) + (5.003 x height in cm) - (6.755 x age in years)BMR for women = 655.1 + (9.563 x weight in kg) + (1.85 x height in cm) – (4.676 x age in years)

BODY MASS INDEX

BMI gauges whether an individual is healthy dependent on their height to weight ratio. This index provides us with our first comparable indication of health and wellbeing for the client.

BMI = Weight in KG / Height in M x Height in MTo complete this equation you will want to calculate Height x Height first and then divide weight by the result

TER

TOTAL ENERGY REQUIREMENT

The total energy requirement (TER) is the total amount of energy or calories an individual needs to consume per day in order to maintain their healthy weight (including their physcial activity levels. In your exam you will be provided with the values placed on varying amounts of exercise. These are:

Sedentary - 1.2 Moderate - 1.55 Very Active - 1.725 Extra Active - 1.9 You then use the numbers provided above to complete the following equation: BMR x ACTIVITY LEVELS
