- The Kiowa lived in the panhandle region of the Great Plains.
- The Great Plains region of Texas had little water for growing crops, and even less trees to build permanent houses.
- As a result, the Kiowa had a nomadic, hunter-gather lifetstyle

- The Kiowa were nomadic, meaning they moved their villages from place to place following the animal herds they depended on for food.
- An entire village could be moved in about 30 minutes. (TSHA).
- The Kiowa, along with other Plains tribes, would pack up all of their belongs on a travois that would then be dragged behind a horse.
Looks like the buffalo have moved on.
Time to pack everything on the travois so we can follow them.

- The Kiowa depended on the buffalo for food, shelter, and clothing
- In addition to buffalo, they hunted smaller animals and gathered wild fruits, nuts, and berries.
- They would often times trade buffalo hides for corn, beans, and squash that were grown by sedentary Native American tribes in Eastern Kansas (https://www.kshs.org/teachers/read_kansas/pdfs/m05card02.pdf)

- Because the Kiowa were nomadic, it was important that their houses could be assembled and dissassembled quickly so that they could quickly follow the buffalo herds.
- As a result, the Kiowa lived in huge tent like shelters called tipis.
- An entire village could be moved in about 30 minutes. (TSHA).
- Each tipi was made up of about 8-15 buffalo hides and 15-25 wood poles (NPS)
- Each tipi, depedning on size, could house anywhere from 8-40 people in it (NPS)
- The Kiowa were well known for their beautifully painted tipis.

Clothing
- Traditional Kiowa clothing was made out of animal hide, usally buffalo or deer (buck skin)
- Men would dress in leggins and breechcloths, with our without shirts
- Women would wear full lengh dresses, often times with elaborate bead and quill work
- Both men and women would wear moccasins
- Both men and women would wrap themselves in buffalo robes for warmth in the winter
