History of Halloween

according to some theories, in fact, it is not a Christian tradition but rather a Celtic one.

Originally called Samhain

according to some Halloween originates from the ancient festival of Samhain, a sort of Celtic New Year that separated the summer period from the winter one. The Samhain festival lasted an entire week during which, according to the beliefs of the time, the earthly world and the afterlife could meet.

All Saints’ Day 609 A.D

When the Romans conquered the Celtic lands, they slowly eliminated all the pagan holidays, considered the work of the devil, and when the feast of all saints was officially established, the people who continued to celebrate the ancient Samhain moved the celebration to October 31st. anniversary.

Decorating with pumpkins

Decorating with pumpkins is a common practice during the fall season and Thanksgiving. Carved pumpkins, often made into lanterns, symbolize the bounty of the harvest season and are considered a traditional icon of thanksgiving.

History of Thanksgiving

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday, setting it on the fourth Thursday in November. The tradition evolved into a day of gratitude, conviviality and meals with family and friends, often characterized by the eating of turkey.

Thanksgiving moment

During the Thanksgiving meal, many families take a moment to express gratitude. This can take different forms, such as speeches, prayers or simple reflections, creating an atmosphere of appreciation and gratitude.

Preparing and Cooking the Turkey

The preparation and cooking of the turkey is at the center of Thanksgiving celebrations. The turkey, often roasted or baked, becomes the main course of a hearty meal that represents gratitude for the harvest and abundance.

Sharing the Meal with Family and Friends

Thanksgiving is a time to gather family and friends around a dinner table. This time of sharing not only celebrates food, but also provides an opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation for relationships.

Where does the tradition of "trick or treat" come from?

In summary, Halloween is not only a scary holiday, but also a time when children go from house to house (or in Italy, from shop to shop) to trick or treat. This tradition seems to date back to the Celtic Halloween period, when food was offered to the dead during the night of Samhain to avoid spite from spirits, fairies and elves. Other theories suggest that trick-or-treating has medieval origins, when beggars asked for food at doors in exchange for prayers for the souls of the dead, threatening bad luck if they weren't given something. This custom was later brought to the United States, where "trick-or-treating" involves knocking on doors thirteen times to avoid a year of bad luck.

Pumpkin pie

Pumpkin pie is a classic Thanksgiving dessert, made with ingredients like pumpkin puree, fall spices and a shortbread crust. This delicious dessert adds a sweet and traditional touch to the party.
