The polis
- It created the Greek alphabet, the first one using letters to represent vowels and consonants
- The polis were governed by a basileus(king) GREEK COLONISATION
- Due to the growth of population and a shortage of agricultural products, some people emigrated and established Greek colonies in other countries.
- Each colony was founded as an independent polis of the city of origin or metropolis
Dark Age
- The Mycenaean civilisation fell into decline and period of crisis began
- After the mycenaean disappaerance, there were no written records known as the Dark Age.
- During this period, population was devided into different groups formed by a family and their slaves.
Mycenaean civilisation
- Developed in the Peloponnese Peninsula
- Built big palaces protected by cyclopean walls
- They were good warriors and conquered the island of Crete
- They incorporated the Linear B writing system
- The most important city was Mycenaewhich gived the name to the civilistaion

Minoan civilisation

- The name refers to the mythical King Minos who was associated labyrinth and the Minotaur
- Developed in the island of Crete.

- Minoans built large and elaborate palaces, without walls and were decorated with paintings called frecos

- Alexander 'The Great' died in 323BC in Babylon at the age of 33 without having named a succesor.
- His empire was divided into the Hellenistic kingdoms, including Greece and Egypt
- These kingdoms had a very prosperous economy thanks to trade
- There was a urban development, with cities like Alexandria
- The Greek culture was spread through the Near Est and Asia
- Rome gradually conquered the Hellenistic kingdoms
- The last Hellenistic kingdom was Egypt, that was made into a roman province in 30 BC
