would rather, would prefer

I would rather go to the party than stay to study

Prefer es un verbo como like, love & hate. Normalmente va seguido de verbo en —ing, pero también admite ir seguido de to + infinitivo.-Would prefer to es como would like to, solamente va seguido de to + infinitivo. -Would rather es el único que es totalmente nuevo. Va siempre seguido de infinitivo sin to.

Prefer

Si vamos a colocar un verbo detrás, para decir prefiero hacer esto, el verbo prefer puede ir seguido de gerundio o de infinitivo.

Prefer to + verbo

prefer + verbo —ing

Si queremos expresar prefiero hacer esto en vez de hacer eso podemos hacerlo de dos formas, dependiendo de si detrás de prefer hemos puesto infinitivo o gerundio.

prefer to + verbo + rather than + verbo

prefer + verbo —ing + to + verbo —ing

También podemos expresarlo sin poner el segundo verbo, es decir, prefiero hacer esto que eso. En ese caso es mucho más normal poner gerundio seguid de prefer. Aquí solo hay un verbo —prefiero hacer (verbo) esto a lo otro.

Would prefer to

Would prefer va siempre seguido de infinitivo con to, igual que would like to. Simplemente es una forma más fina y educada que prefer.

would prefer to + verbo

Para decir prefiero hacer esto que hacer eso usando would prefer, tenemos que hacerlo usando rather than.

would prefer to + verbo + rather than + verbo

Would rather

Would rather también significa prefiero o preferiría, pero va siempre seguido de verbo en infinitivo sin to. Lo más normal es usarlo en su forma contraída ‘d rather. También se puede decir would sooner, aunque es menos común en inglés moderno.

‘d rather + verbo

Para decir prefiero hacer esto que hacer eso usando would rather, usamos solo than seguido de verbo sin to.

‘d rather + verbo + than + verbo

- I prefer eating meat to fish - I prefer going to staying - I prefer to go rather than stay - I would prefer to go rather than stay - I would rather go than stay

Errores comunes

Ejemplo 1: Preferiría dormir ahora. I would rather to sleep now. (INCORRECTA) I would rather sleep now. (CORRECTA) La primera oración es incorrecta ya que después de RATHER se usa el verbo en su forma base sin TO. Ejemplo 2: Preferiría no tener más hijos. She wouldn’t rather having more children. (INCORRECTA) She’d rather not have more children. (CORRECTA) La primera frase es incorrecta ya que el NOT debe estar después de RATHER y el verbo principal debe tener la forma base.

John: Do you prefer dogs or cats? (¿Prefieres a los perros o a los gatos?) Michael: I prefer cats to dogs (Prefiero a los gatos que a los perros) John: Oh, good. Take this cat. (Oh, bueno. Toma este gato.) Michael: No, I’d rather take the dog. (No, preferiría tomar al perro.) Michael: The cat is too nervous and might scratch my new sweater. (El gato está muy nervioso y podría arañar mi suéter nuevo)
