OVERVIEW

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

PC

While political correctness is generally a positive phenomenon, it has been taken to extremes in recent years, devaluing its initial purpose of eradicating discrimination with regards to political discourse

STAGE 1

CASES

STAGE 1

Study some of the recent cases connected with either overuse of political correctness or cases of verbal abuse as manifestation of discriminatory attitudes. Choose the one you would like to use in the lead-in as an introduction into the matter. The lead-in is down to the moderator, but the discussion stage is to be done as a group. Google Docs will come in handy when you need to share your findings with the other team members. Each student is to contribute a case (find and bring to the class an article) to illustrate either the excessive or justifiable use of PC, euphemisms, gender-specific language.Discuss your findings in class.

Blame liberals for the rise of Donald Trump

Was Megyn Kelly the Victim of Political Correctness?

McGregor against Mayweather

Cadbury and Nestle slammed by shoppers for removing word Easter from their chocolate eggs

H&M faced backlash over its ‘monkey’ sweatshirt ad

STAGE 2

LANGUAGE LAB

STAGE 2

While preparing for the round table, you will be reading articles on the subject and watching related videos. Whenever you come across a word or a collocation pertaining to the topic (within the topic of Political Correctness these could be words and phrases like catcalling, blackface, blacklist vs deny list, amplifying melanated voices etc.), write it down in your topic vocabulary list. This is best done at GoogleDocs, where you group all of your findings in a table.

You can also share your findings employing different interactive and engaging formats, such as presentations, quzzes, tests, mnemonics as shown in the presentation.

STAGE 3

OUTLINE & PERSPECTIVES

STAGE 3

Make an outline of the Round Table with the perspectives for the discussionAt this stage, students do not assume roles yet, they rather speculate on the variety of opinions that could be voiced on the subject and do Internet and other media research. It is better if the number of perspectives equals the number of attendees, which does not exclude the possibility of some of the speakers having points of convergence. TRT Round Table with the subheads may serve as an example of constructing the route for discussion. Here are some examples of the perspectives on PC:- With the universal spread and promotion of Human Rights, our language must become a tool for eliminating inequality, discrimination, denigration.- Paradoxical though it may seem, politically correct words may offend certain groups of people. We invent complex constructs, such as ‘hearing impaired’ or ‘visually impaired’ thus attaching a stigma to being deaf or blind.Report on your progress in class.

HOLD A ROUND TABLE

One of the most commonly stated goals of political correctness is the elimination of verbal discrimination and negative stereotyping

Was Megyn Kelly the Victim of Political Correctness? Megyn Kelly was certainly one of the victims of political correctness taken to extremes. She lost her job at the NBC News, as the management deemed one of her remarks racist, offensive and insensitive. Megyn casually noted that painting your face black during Halloween is not racist at all, which caused uproar among some people who were aware of the American “blackface” tradition, which goes back to 18th century, when comedians used to mock slaves by painting their own faces black. Subsequent social media polls suggested that an overwhelming majority of people saw nothing racist in Kelly’s statement.

In 2017. McGregor, known for his trash-talking and controversial personality, was involved in a heated promotional tour for his boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. During the tour, McGregor made racially insensitive comments towards Mayweather, sparking outrage and backlash from the public. McGregor later apologised for his remarks, but the incident highlighted the issue of political incorrectness and racism in the MMA community.

Right-wing/ Conservative politician

Represents the interest of the middle-class, middle-aged segment. Claims that politically correct, soft language distorts reality obscuring the burning problems and widening the gap between politicians and the public. This is one of the reasons why Trump won in the US elections. “Thanks to unrelenting demands by the left for increasingly preposterous levels of political correctness over the past decade, people are simply fed up. Trump survives -- nay, thrives! -- because he is seen as the antidote, bravely and unimpeachably standing athwart political correctness”

Representative of Educational Organisation for Inclusive Society

insists on the use of politically correct language, especially when it comes to a group as vulnerable as disabled children. Claims that people should be taught to use soft language at the earliest age possible.

Trump – a 69-year-old egomaniacal billionaire reality-TV star who had never held elective office or had anything to do with the Republican party and who lied compulsively about everything – won the primaries and went on to beat Clinton, one of the most experienced and well-connected politicians in modern America (although he didn’t win the popular vote, and had some help from the Kremlin). Something very big had happened, and it wasn’t due to Sanders’ magnetism or Trump’s likability. It was a rebellion against the establishment. That rebellion is still going on, although much of the establishment still denies it. They prefer to attribute Trump’s rise solely to racism.Racism did play a part. But to understand why racism had such a strong impact in 2016, especially on the voting of whites without college degrees, it’s important to see what drove it. After all, racism in America dates back long before the founding of the Republic, and even modern American politicians have had few compunctions about using racism to boost their standing.

Why Democrats share the blame for the rise of Donald Trump

Political correctness is a positive phenomenon if it is used according to the free choice of those using it, whereas its forceful imposing by the government is unacceptable since it compromises the principle of the freedom of speech. Political Correctness as an essential part of a free society doesn’t correlate with freedom of speech, as one has to watch what they say so as not to offend anyone. Political correctness is certainly a fundamental step on the way to tolerance and an inclusive society, but in everything you need to have a reasonable framework. Often such language becomes inaccurate and it is almost impossible to understand a certain message. Political correctness should become an established feature in the official lexicon as it contributes to the elimination of discrimination and inequality. The language we speak determines the way we think, and therefore the adoption and spread of political correctness represents a crucial step towards eradicating discrimination and creating a more equal society.

If words shape reality, then
repeated words
often create the
behavior itself.

Business Consultancy Analyst

Covers a business aspect of political correctness. PC is yet another way of dressing up the truth, which entails loss of time, so precious in business as ‘time is money’, on figuring out what really lies beneath this or that involved explanation. Executives and HRs also risk making wrong choices while recruiting candidates. It is professionalism rather than belonging to any of the minority groups that should always be a priority.

CEO of a large multinational company

Another view on PC in business. Doing business internationally involves working with people of different ethnicities, faiths, cultures. PC must be a priority in such a business environment. Politically correct teams of workers prove to be more innovative as they do not feel inhibited to voice their ideas freely, irrespective of their sex, race or age.

Cancel culture is a movement to remove celebrity status or esteem from a person, place, or thing based on offensive behavior or transgression. How, in your view, should violating the norms of politically correct behaviour be punished - by legal prosecution or by public condemnation?

Political correctness is now a common weapon in the cultural and political war between American conservatives and liberals
PC culture—a theoretical purely politically correct society—is most commonly associated with movements such as gender-based bias, gay rights, and ethnic minority advocacy

PC used to refer to language that seems intended to give the least amount of offense, especially when describing groups identified by external markers such as race, gender, culture, or sexual orientation. While political correctness is generally a positive phenomenon, it has been taken to extremes in recent years, devaluing its initial purpose of eradicating discrimination with regards to political discourse.

H&M faced backlash over its ‘monkey’ sweatshirt ad. It isn’t the company’s only controversy H&M came under fire for an ad that featured a black child donning a sweatshirt with the words “coolest monkey in the jungle” etched on the front. The scandal drew public accusations of racism all over social media.H&M has taken several actions, including hiring a diversity leader and issuing a public apology that was featured at the top of its website. Besides, the company was accused of featuring more white models than black ones in its advertisements.

Journalist

Political Correctness is a threat to liberalism as it restricts freedom of speech. “Political Correctness is pernicious. It is blamed because very often people in power tell powerless people to shut up.” Due to politically correct language, it has become much easier for “journalists” who are far from being professional to manipulate public opinion and disseminate propaganda, with terrorists disguised as ‘freedom fighters’ and separatists as ‘rebels’.

Representative of the Disability Rights Centre

Decries hypocrisy. Focuses on more down-to-earth problems the disabled people are faced with rather than coining new politically correct terms. Inventing more and more complex terms for disabilities is downright populist. It is a badge of shame that decent living standards are unattainable for the disabled in Russia, which in this respect ranks lower than many emerging economies. Language seems to be the last sphere which requires reforming.

Chairperson

makes an opening statement and offers a lead-in, sets the tone of the discussion focusing on the questions formulated at Stage 3.

The list of questions and points for discussion is to be continued by the student that assumes this role. It is important to study the profiles of the speekers to conduct the discussion professionally. Making a presentation with the background and subheads/ questions may facilitate the procedure of conducting the Round Table.

Critics argue that political correctness cannot change the underlying feelings that lead to discrimination and social marginalization

Political correctness (PC)

used to refer to language that seems intended to give the least amount of offense, especially when describing groups identified by external markers such as race, gender, culture, or sexual orientation

President’s / Prime Minister’s Speech-writer

Presents the ‘official’ view on political correctness, emphasizing the importance of a careful use of words, especially while dealing with a wide range of social and ethnic groups. Examples of real cases with high-profile politicians fueling scandals by inappropriate vocabulary choice are welcome.
The demand for political correctness is often controversial and becomes the source of criticism and satire

Representative of the Radical Feminist movement/ Women’s Rights Activist

Gender equality will remain elusive as long as sexist language prevails in society.Gender-specific language inhibits the development of civil society.

Writer

Presents a purist approach to the language. Claims that the beauty of the language is distorted by purpose-made, weird and wonderful constructs, whereas it should develop on its own, natural and intact.

The terms “diversity”, “economic inactivity”, “street activity index” are loosely associated with discrimination, unemployment, crime rate and other highly emotional terms. Some experts claim that Political Correctness: - Promotes inclusivity and diversity - Reduces harm -Encourages empathy While others posit that Political Correctness: - Limits free speech - Creates a culture of censorship - Can have a reverse effect and be divisive This is a Round Table raising a pressing issue of political correctness.
