Population dynamics of Niger

A general introduction to the country

Niger is a landlocked country in Western Africa. The northern four-fifths of the country is desert, and the southern one-fifth is savanna. The government system is a semi-presidential republic; the chief of state is the president, and the head of government is the prime minister. Many of the citizens rely on subsistence farming, but Niger has a largely free-market system in which the prices are set by the market. Niger is a member of the Economic Community of West African States.

Population and economy

Located in the heart of the Sahel, Niger has a poorly diversified economy, dependent on agriculture for 40% of its GDP. The level of extreme poverty is expected to reach 44.1% in 2023 due to negative per capita growth and rising inflation, which will increase the extremely poor population by 700,000 bringing the total to 12 million in 2023. By September 2023, Niger was hosting more than 700,000 displaced people, including refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons. Between August and early September 2023, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) recorded the arrival of over 6,900 asylum seekers in Niger, mainly from Chad, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. Political background A candidate of the ruling party, Mohamed Bazoum was elected president in the December 2020 and February 2021 elections. He was the first to democratically succeed his predecessor. But on July 26, 2023, members of his presidential guard dismissed him, justifying their decision by saying they wanted to avoid further economic and security problems. Following this move, at an emergency summit held in Nigeria on July 30, 2023, ECOWAS demanded that Bazoum be reinstated. And indicated that if he was not, "all measures" would be taken to restore constitutional order. "These measures may include the use of force to this end". ECOWAS has imposed financial sanctions on the putschists and the country, freezing "all commercial and financial transactions" between member states and Niger, one of the world's poorest countries.

Niger's largest ethnic groups are the Hausa, who also make up the main ethnic group in northern Nigeria, and the Zarma Songhai (also spelled Germa Songhai), who are also found in parts of Mali. Both groups are sedentary farmers living in arable areas in the south. The Kanuri (including Beriberi and Manga) make up the majority of the permanent population living in the far southeast of the country. The rest of the Nigerians are nomadic or semi-nomadic, such as the Tuareg, Fulani, Tubu and Diffa Arabs. Rapid population growth and the accompanying competition for scarce natural resources has brought the lifestyles of these two types of people in increasing conflict in recent years in Niger. Since Niger was a former French colony, some white French live in the country. Niger's high infant mortality rate is comparable to levels recorded in neighboring countries. However, due to the generally poor health and poor nutrition of most children in the country, the child mortality rate (mortality rate among children aged 1 to 4 years) is very high (274 per 1,000 people). Man). Despite Niger's very high total fertility rate (6.89 children per woman, the highest in the world), almost half (49%) of the population of Niger is under the age of 15. I mean School attendance is low (34%). The breakdown is 38% male and 27% female. Additional education is provided through Quranic schools.

Population dynamics of Italy

A general introduction to the country

Italy is a country located in Southern Europe comprising the boot-shaped Italian peninsula and a number of islands including Sicily and Sardinia. Neighboring countries include Austria, France, Holy See, San Marino, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Italy has a strategic location dominating central Mediterranean as well as proximity to Western Europe across the Adriatic Sea. The government system is a republic; the chief of state is the president, and the head of government is the prime minister. Italy has a diversified industrial economy, which is divided into a developed industrial north, dominated by private companies, and a less developed, welfare-dependent, agricultural south. Italy is a member of the European Union (EU).

Italy high dependent population

The young-age dependency ratio is the ratio of younger dependents (who are generally economically inactive and younger than 15 years old), compared to the number of people of working age (15-64-year-olds). A high dependency ratio means those of working age, and the overall economy, face a greater burden in supporting the aging population. Italy's age dependency ratio for young people was: 19.9%, reported in 2019 (most recent observation). This is a lower value against a global average of 44.7%. A lower ratio indicates less financial stress on working people and greater political stability. Italy's data is highlighted in the table below, use the filter and sort order options to allow easy comparison with other countries.
