Primer SIG computarizado. Roger Tomlinson desarrolla el Sistema de Información Geográfica de Canadá. Buscando n inventario para gestionar los recursos naturales de Canadá.
Comercialización de los SIG. Gracias al avance tecnológico de las computadoras y al mejoramiento de las herramientas de Esri. Se lanza para uso comercial ARC/Info.
Nuevos enfoques en cartografía. John K. Wright con sus análisis de geografía cuantitativa.
Fundación de ESRI. Creada por Jack Dangermond. La cual permitía el mapeo computarizado y análisis espacial para planificación territorial y administración de los recursos de la tierra.

Waldo Tobler define los principios del sistema MIMO (map in-map out) para utilizar los ordenadores al campo de la cartografía.
Howard Fisher crea el programa de software de mapeo: SYMAP en la universidad NorthWesthern. Donde se investiga el análisis espacial y se desarrollan los conceptos de GIS y sus aplicaciones
David Sinton desarrolla GRID, programa en el que la información es almacenada en forma de cuadrículas. Lo que dio inicio a los sistemas de información geográfica raster.
Se empieza a publicar la revista International Journal of Geographical Information System. Órgano de difusión de información de los SIG.
