1989 was a very difficult era for taylor. She was having a lot if success, but she was also struggling a lot. Years later, in her famous documentary “Miss Americana”, she talked about the fact that she had an eating disorder, mostly caused by a lot of haters who used to bodyshaming her. She talked about how she felt like fainting after all the shows and how tough it was to live with an ed just to fit into the standard of society.
But that’s not everything, because during that era she also had another discussion with Kanye West, and his now ex wife Kim Kardashian. I wrote this song with Liz, and I think the lyrics to this song are some of the best we’ve ever written. It’s about that moment where you realize someone isn’t at all who you thought they were, and that you’ve been trying to make excuses for someone who doesn’t deserve them. And that some people are just never going to love you. We were halfway through writing this when I started singing ‘And now that I’m sitting here thinking it through, I’ve never been anywhere cold as you’.
