La casa di babbo Natale si trova a Rovaniemi in Lapponia, ma è a Turku, l’antica capitale finlandese, che s’inaugura il Natale, con la Dichiarazione Natalizia di Pace: una tradizione iniziata nel Medioevo che viene rispettata ancora oggi. Tutti i finlandesi la seguono in tv e solo da quel momento il Natale ha davvero inizio. Nel frattempo il barbuto Joulipukki (Babbo Natale) in persona dà il via ai festeggiamenti, sfilando per le strade di Helsinki tra le ghirlande illuminate. In Finlandia le festività natalizie sono molto sentite, al punto che in finnico dicembre si dice joulukuu (ovvero mese di Natale).
I finlandesi, come in molti paesi scandinavi, addobbano l’albero il 23 dicembre, il giorno della “piccola vigilia” e festeggiano il Natale nel giorno della vigilia: il 24 è tradizione fare la sauna con tutta la famiglia e andare a trovare i propri defunti al cimitero, pranzare con i parenti e aspettare che Babbo Natale bussi alla porta, interroghi i bambini per sapere se sono stati buoni e distribuisca i regali.
In Svezia le celebrazioni natalizie iniziano il 13 dicembre con Santa Lucia, che si festeggia anche in alcune parti d’Italia tra cui Siracusa, di cui è la santa patrona. Durante le feste è tradizione che le primogenite svedesi si vestano da Lussebruden (sposa Lucia) con un lungo abito bianco cinto da una fusciacca rossa, indossando sul capo una coroncina di ramoscelli di mirtillo rosso intrecciati con delle candeline accese. Ai giorni nostri si usano le candeline elettriche: più prosaico ma decisamente più sicuro
Oltre che con palline colorate e luci scintillanti, in Ucraina l’albero viene addobbato anche con delle ragnatele finte. È sicuramente una delle più particolari tradizioni natalizie nel mondo, che lascia tutti a bocca aperta e deriva da un’antica leggenda: si racconta che una vedova vivesse in una vecchia casa coi suoi figli. La famiglia era molto povera e non aveva abbastanza soldi per addobbare il proprio albero di Natale. Così, la notte della Vigilia, donna e bambini andarono a letto, consapevoli che la mattina dopo li avrebbe accolti un albero spoglio e privo di decorazioni. I ragni, percependo la tristezza dei bambini, decisero di creare tante bellissime ragnatele per decorare l’albero in maniera semplice ma elegante. Oggi, aggiungere una ragnatela al proprio albero è sinonimo di buona fortuna.
