Expectations Matrix
Initial teaching and reteaching after extended breaks and/or as data indicates necessary are crucial to the success of any PBIS program. It's important to be explicit in your teaching to minimize confusion and unmeant interpretations of expectations.

Matrix Best-Practices
Language on your school's matrix should be clear and concise. It's important to avoid ambiguous words that leave interpretation up to each student. Take a look at the sample matrix to the right.

Matrix Best-Practices
Let's look at an example that has been corrected. The corrections are in bold text. You can see that the new language is much more clear and explicit, making it easier for students to understand what is truly expected of them. Some expectations, such as "Use equipment for its purpose only," will still need to be taught to students, as we cannot assume that students come to us knowing the purpose of each piece of equipment. Check out an example for teaching this expectation by clicking the tooltip icon.

At PBIS Rewards, we know that getting started on your PBIS journey is no easy feat. We want you to know that our team members are equipped, ready, and eager to help ensure your success! Below are several tips and resources, including a matrix template, to help get you started.
- School's often use their mascot, motto, or an inspiring word to help develop a memorable acronym. Many schools choose to keep it simple by using Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.
- Remember, it's important to use positive language on your matrix. Avoid using "Do not..." phrases.
- It's also important to use direct and consice expectations. If you need further guidelines, try to keep each box on your matrix to 3 or less expectations, and keep expectations below 10 words each.
- Make a plan to print or order posters to hang at each identified location with the expectations for that area.

Defining your Point System in PBIS Rewards
*Note: Point settings are only available to those with PBIS Rewards administrator access.
The PBIS Rewards system has three ways in which point rewarding can be configured. Our recommendation for schools starting their PBIS journey is the option selected below, 1 Point per Expectation.

The Classroom Matrix
Just like the Schoolwide Behavior Matrix, having and teaching expectations with a Classroom Matrix provides consistency and clarity for students. Some schools may provide a Classroom Matrix for their teachers, and others may ask their teachers to create their own matrix, tailored to the needs of their classroom. Hover over the tooltips on the picture for some great tips on process and routine expectations to include on your classroom's behavior matrix, then click next to continue.

"Am I supposed to give points every day for bringing their books or coming in the classroom quietly?"
Behavior Reinforcement
Yes.
At least at first (more on that later). Think of all of the stores and restaurants you frequent. It would be hard to think of one that does not offer some type of loyalty rewards. Why? Stores want you to keep coming back, AKA behave a certain way. When we reward our students for following expectations, we are encouraging them to behave in a way that is conducive to their learning. Giving points shows students that you see and appreciate their positive behavior, and lets them know they are valued and inspires them to be committed and happy students.

Behavior Reinforcement Schedule Example
We understand that internalizing a schedule of giving rewards takes time. Our trainer, , is here to tell us a bit about how to plan a schedule that encourages students to meet the expectations in your classroom.

Behavior Specific Praise
Behavior specific praise is an important aspect of PBIS, as it is indicating to the student that you recognize their efforts, showing other students in the class that you are both looking for appropriate behaviors, and provides students who are potentially not meeting expectations an example of what is appropriate and an opportunity to correct their behavior. Sincerity and consistency are key!
Giving Behavior Specific Praise is as easy as....
1) A behavior expectation is being met and is observed.2) Observer gives praise, telling the student how this behavior affects them, by using an "I feel" statement.

How would you use Behavior Specific Praise to acknowledge this student?

1/5
Can you spot the Behavior Specific Praise?
I like how Jenny's not getting on my last nerve!
I like how Jenny is working independently on voice level 0.
1/5
Right! Even if Jenny is truly the only one who is "not getting on your last nerve," you should always refrain from insinuating other students are behaving negatively.
Next
2/5
Can you spot the Behavior Specific Praise?
Jared, I am so impressed at how you are using the recess equipment appropriately.
Jared is the only one not kicking basketballs.
2/5
Right! Remember, the goal is to draw attention to what behavior is meeting the expectation, rather than any behaviors that are not meeting expectations.
Next
3/5
Can you spot the Behavior Specific Praise?
Class, we do not play games during classtime.
Austin, it's so respectful when you are focusing while using technology.
3/5
Right! It's a great idea to acknowledge a student who is meeting expectations to give other students an example of what you expect, but it's best to point out the correct student, rather than the others who are not following expectations.
Next
4/5
Can you spot the Behavior Specific Praise?
I really like how Grace is actually sharing her materials for once.
Grace, thank you for sharing your materials. That is very generous!
4/5
Way to go! While it is important to acknowledge students who may be little longer to learn an expectation when you see they're behaving appropriately, it's never ok to draw attention to their struggle.
Next
5/5
Can you spot the Behavior Specific Praise?
Annie, I admire how respectful you are during class.
I really like how Annie is not talking while I am talking.
5/5
Correct! Again, pointing out the expectation that Annie is following is key.

Back-to-School Blitz
We've mentioned that initial teaching of expectations at the beginning of the year is absolutely imperative to having success with PBIS. This task can feel daunting, but we have a few suggestions and sample schedules to help get you started!
- Plan on spending time each day during the first two weeks of school teaching expectations
- We recommend your school's PBIS Leadership Team writing lessons for each schoolwide expectation. This ensures all students are getting the same instruction and takes the task off of the teachers' plates in an already very busy season.
- Don't hesitate to have fun with this! Making lighthearted videos of examples and nonexamples of expected behaviors give teaching expectations some fun and flair!
- Add in a competition or game. It could be between grade levels, homerooms, or classes.
Note: If you exit this course or log out, your progress will be saved where you leave off. If you return to previously completed units, you will have to click through the content again to move forward.
