Impressionism

What is?

Impressionism is a pictorial style that originates in France, in the second half of the 19th century. It is characterized by its persistent experimentation with lighting (similar to luminism). The management of light is considered a crucial factor in achieving beauty and balance in painting.

Mary Cassatt

Artists

Claude Monet was a French painter, one of the creators of Impressionism. The term impressionism derives from the title of his work Impression, rising sun. His first works, until the mid-1860s, are in a realistic style. Monet managed to exhibit some at the Paris Salon.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. Although born in Pennsylvania, she spent much of her adult life in France, where she forged a friendship with Edgar Degas and joined the Impressionist movement.
