Common Mistakes
To say how many nouns exist, we use quantifiers and determiners. Be careful, since some determiners use the plural form of the noun.
- There are some apples in the fridge.
- There aren't any tomatoes left
- How many oranges do you need?
- Pamela has a lot of friends
- They have no beds left at the hotel.

Uncountable nouns
General Categories
The following nouns are Uncountable in English:
- Liquids & Oils: water, coffee, milk, alcohol, blood, tea, oil, olive oil, wine.
- Powders: salt, sugar, coffee, chocolate, sand, flour.
- Seeds, grains and cereals: rice, corn, pepper, coriander, spices.
- Doughs & pastas: bread, pizza dough,.
Countable Nouns
Definition & Characteristics
Nouns can refer to things which are treated as separate items which can be counted. They can be either singular or plural. In singular they take a/an (that means 1), and in plurals also they can use determiners. (British Council, n.d.; Cambridge, 2023).
- Follow the general rules for plurals in English: add "s" a the end of the noun.
- They take numbers 1, apple, 4 carrots
- Can use verbs in plural or singular

Uncountable Nouns
Definition & Characteristics
Some nouns cannot be counted using numbers, and they only use singular forms. In singular they take a/an (that means 1), and in plurals also they can use determiners. (British Council, n.d.; Cambridge, 2023).
- They can be abstract ideas or so small objects
- Liquids, doughs, powders, gases grains, and seeds belong to this category
