Empahtic Structures

Various sentence structures make a sentence more emphatic or emphasize certain parts of a sentence.

it + be + emphasized phrase + that

We use it + be + emphasized phrase + that to emphasize the subject, object, or an adverbial phrase.

In Thailand, the beaches are the most popular places to visit. In Thailand, it's the beaches that are the most popular places to visit- (emphasizing subject)

I most want to see is Egypt. It's Egypt that I most want to see. (emphasizing obejct)

Most people go to Greece in the summer. (Emphasizing the adverbial phrase)

It's in the summer that most people go to Greece.

Spain

We can use a relative pronoun instead of "that".

It's Jenny who/that I want to visit in Spain..

what or the thing (that) + subject+ that + be

We use what or the thing (that) + subject + verb + be to emphasize a subject, object, a clause with that or a clause with a wh-word.

The information we want to emphasize comes at the end of the sentence after be. I hate airports the most. The thing that I hate the most is airports. (emphasizing the object)

We need to decide which dates we can travel on. What we need to decide is which dates we can travel on. (emphasizing a wh-word)

I hope that our train isn't delayed. (emphasizing a clause with that) What...

What I hope is that our train isn't delayed.

Japan

We can also emphasize a whole clause with what + subject + verb + to do + be + (to) + base form.

My country needs to invest in tourism. What my country needs to do is (to) invest in tourism.
