Drama
Drama is any form of storytelling that is told through performance. Actors on stage use dialogue, or written speech between characters to reveal their thoughts and feelings. Dramatic writers also provide stage directions, which can describe the set, a sound effect, or the appearance and actions of a character. The dialogue, stage directions, and actor instructions are part of the script, or the written text of a drama.
The action in dramatic writing is broken up by scenes and acts. A scene is a continuous sequence of action between one or more characters. An act is a series of scenes in a dramatic work that is used to break the text into multiple main parts. We can recognize dramatic writing even when we are not seeing it on stage. Film uses sound and images to convey story. Musicals are plays or films which incorporate singing and dancing. Any time a playwright or screenwriter uses dialogue, performance, and acting to share a story, it is considered a drama. The genre of drama has many subgenres. For example, in this unit, you will read screenplays, comedies, tragedies, and stage plays. *Watch Concept definition video

Screenplay
A screenplay tells a film production crew what to film. It includes each character’s dialogue as well as descriptions of the action and what viewers will see and hear. Other screenplay elements include the scene heading, which indicates the location and time of day, and abbreviated technical notes placed after each character’s name that indicate how the voice will be heard on-screen. EX: Hotel Rwanda
Comedy
A comedy is designed to make the audience or readers laugh and generally includes plot twists that lead to a happy ending. Comedies can be organized into subgenres based on the source of their humor. Farces, for example, are built around improbable situations and are characterized by horseplay and crude characterizations. Satires use humor, sarcasm, and irony to criticize individuals, institutions, or ideas for the purpose of highlighting problems and bringing about change. Ex: Cherokee Family Reunion
Tragedy
In a tragedy, the main characters undergo a series of unfortunate events that eventually lead to disaster. Tragedies often begin with happy times, but soon a problem arises that worsens to a crisis. The main characters are unable to prevent the problem from overtaking them, resulting in a catastrophic ending. EX: Antigone, Macbeth
Stage Play
Stage plays are scripted dramas that are meant to be performed on stage for a live audience. Stage plays are divided into acts and scenes, and the scripts contain stage directions and dialogue. Ex: Cherokee Family Reunion Antigone Macbeth
