Prohibition of slavery and forced labour
THE EUROPEAN CONVENTION ON HUMAN RIGHTS
The European Convention on Human Rights is an international convention to protect human rights and political freedoms in Europe.
Any person who feels their rights have been violated under the convention by a state party can take a case to the court. Judgments finding violations are binding on the states concerned and they are obliged to execute them.
WHAT DOES IT SAY?
Article 4 is an absolute article that cannot be limited. It prohibits slavery and servitude and places a positive obligation on States to ensure that there is no violation of this prohibition.
FUNDAMENTAL POINTS
- No one shall be held in slavery or servitude
- No one shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labour
- Conscription, national service, prison labour and normal civic obligation are excluded
