ABOUT THE AUTHOR
NANI PALKHIWALA
At college, he earned a master's degree in English literature and thus,overcame his speech impediment. Upon graduating, Palkhivala applied for a position as lecturer at Bombay University, but was not awarded the post. Soon found himself trying to obtain admission to institutions of higher learning to further his academic career. It being late in the term, most courses were closed, and he enrolled at Government Law College, Bombay, where he discovered that he had a gift for unravelling the intricacies of jurisprudence.
Nani Palkhivala was born in 1920 in Bombay to blue collar, middle- class Parsi parents. His family name derives from the profession of his forefathers (a common practice among Parsis), who had been manufacturers of palanquins ("palkhis"). He was educated at Masters Tutorial High School, and later at St. Xavier's College, both in Bombay. He was a dedicated scholar and excelled even though he was hampered by a bad stammer.
2. GREENMOVEMENT'S ROLE
In this chapter, the writer raises an issue towards the deteriorating health of the earth. As human beings have been exploiting natural resources from decades, presently the condition has made the environment critical. In 1972, the Green Movement helped environmentalists to raise awareness about the harmful condition of the earth and since then there has been no looking back as the movement has been successfully educating people about the conservation of the environment. Earth is like a patient whose health is declining and it is our duty to improve it. In 1987, the term Sustainable Development was used by the World Commission on Environment and Development. A zoo in Lukasa, Zambia has a cage in which a sign reads ‘The World’s most dangerous animal’ and inside there is a mirror. It gives a message that human beings are the most dangerous animals. Brandt Commission raised a question “Are we to leave our successors a scorched planet of advancing deserts, impoverished landscapes and ailing environment?” There are four principal biological systems that form the foundation of the global economic system – fisheries, grasslands, forests, and croplands. These four systems also provide food and raw materials for industries except for minerals and synthetics. With these systems becoming unsustainable, fisheries will collapse, the forest will slowly disappear, grasslands will turn into a barren wasteland and croplands will become worse.
In poor countries, forests are being cut down for fuelwood which is used for cooking purposes. There are some areas where the cost of fuelwood is more than the cost of food. It is leading to deforestation at an alarming rate. One of the reasons for the exploitation of the environment is the increasing population. It is observed that about one million population is increasing in every four days. This is not a good sign. There is an urgent need to control overpopulation in the world. Development is the best contraceptive for this problem as it will help in reduction in fertility, increase in education and income and improvement in health. We must see the world as a whole and not as dissociated parts. It is a holistic and ecological view. According to Lester Brown, we have not inherited the earth from our forefathers but we have borrowed it from our future generations.

CAUSES
Mankind is now the number one cause of all the destruction happening on Earth. • As well as trying to destroy each other on the battle-field, we are the cause of a series of other disasters, beginning with the industrial exploitation of the resources of the Earth. The seas and oceans are being poisoned by chemical products, oils, industrial and human waste.

On land, especially in the industrial countries where most waste is actually "manufactured", there is increasingly little room to bury it and even when buried, noxious elements leech out and destroy the health of the area. An even greater problem is the disposal of Atomic waste, unsafe to dump into the sea and even more unsafe to bury under the land. • Forests are cut down for many reasons, but most of them are related to money or to people's need to provide for their families.

AFTERMATH
Human activities that contribute to desertification include the expansion and intensive use of agricultural lands, poor irrigation practices, deforestation, and overgrazing. These unsustainable land uses place enormous pressure on the land by altering its soil chemistry and hydrology. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by close to 30% since the start of the Industrial Revolution. This has resulted in a widespread, ongoing extinction of other species during the present geological epoch, now known as the Holocene extinction.
The large-scale loss of species caused by human influence since the 1950s has been called a biotic crisis, with an estimated 10% of the total species lost as of 2007.

PRESENT SCENARIO
Earth's present condition is that it is in a damaged state and under threat from dangers including those arising from global warming. These threats include greenhouse gases, droughts and floods, hunger and famine and devastating diseases such as malaria and aids. • Some experts scientists are calling for carbon taxes to cut the risk. FUTURE OF EARTH
As the world consumes ever more fossil fuel energy. greenhouse gas concentrations will continue to rise and Earth's average temperature will rise with them. -Global warming will result in more hot days and fewer cool days, with the greatest warming happening over land, Longer, more intense heat waves will happen more often. •High latitudes and generally wet places will tend to receive more rainfall, while trop generally dry places will probabl
Increases in rainfall will come ecosystems will shift as those plants and animals that adapt the quickest will move into new areas to compete with the currently established species. •Those species that cannot adapt quickly enough will face extinction.

MEASURES TO BE TAKEN
Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving gasoline, walking and biking are great forms of exercise. Explore your community mass transit system, and check out options for carpooling to work or school. When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently For example, keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. •Keep your vehicle well maintained. A poorly maintained engine both creates more air pollution and uses more fuel.
