Who was the leader of the Communist party during the Transition?
Santiago José Carrillo Solares was a Spanish politician who served as General Secretary of the Communist Party during the Transition. He became the party's secretary general in 1956.
When was the Communist Party legalized and why?
Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez legalized the communist party on April 9th, 1977. This decision was controversial, but it ended up being a good decision because it contributed to the restoration of democracy in Spain. It allowed for more political freedom for Spaniards.
Why wasn't the Communist Party legalized earlier?
It took so long to legalize this party because while Franco was still alive, people were heasitant to legalize this party due to the fear of the influence that Franco had over Spain. It was legalized 18 months after Franco died.
