Parallels with what you've read
Using chapters 1 to 13, describe how Gilead limits women’s freedom and controls their bodies and reproduction. What forms do these restrictions take? Give examples from the story.
Today, you will work in small teams to escape from Gilead into Canada by completing tasks about the novel. You will choose one person to act as the liaison, or link, between your group and me who must come to me any time that you complete a task and crack a code. Remember to answer your booklets and fill them in as you learn codes to help you escape. Good luck and PRAISE BE. UNDER HIS EYE”
Escape Gilead
Welcome to the Handmaid's Tale Escape Room.
“Welcome to The Handmaid’s Tale Escape Room. You are all normal citizens trapped in a nation that seems to be crumbling from the inside out. You’ve lost your jobs, your bank accounts, your freedom, and every day you notice more and more of your friends have disappeared... but to where?
Two Voices, One Issue
Write a 20–25 line conversation between: • a modern American woman living in a state where abortion has been restricted, • a Handmaid from The Handmaid’s Tale. They meet and compare their situations, their rights, their fears, and their hopes. Your dialogue must include: • 3 legal / political vocabulary words (e.g., ban, lawsuit, criminalization, bodily autonomy, surveillance, rights, policy…) • 1 explicit comparison between their two contexts (e.g., “Your situation reminds me of…” / “In Gilead, it’s even worse because…”) • 2 modal verbs (might, must, should, could, can’t, would…) • 1 strong concluding line (a final sentence that leaves an impression or summarises their shared struggle)
You are Offred and after a visit to the Commander's office to play Scrabble at night you start thinking about this special relationship uniting you with the Commander and Serena. Write your stream of consciousness.
Step 1: Make a list of adjectives you can use to define your feelings towards the ommander, Serena and yourself. Step 2: Male a list of prompts you could use to start your sentences (think about the stream of consciousness style). Can you add similes? Step 3: Practise speaking out loud from your notes.
