The population of the Bahamas is diverse, made up mainly of African, European and Amerindian descendants. Nassau, the capital, is the most populous city and is located on the island of New Providence. The total population is around 413,592 people.

The Bahamas is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. The head of state is a British monarch,,the King Charles III, represented by a governor-general, and the head of government is the prime minister.

July 10th, the date of National Independence, begins Independence Week, celebrated with parades and rockets.

Junkanoo is often compared to a Carnival or Mardi Gras, but this is an authentic Bahamian celebration. It is a festival in which residents dress up in beautiful, colorful, self-made costumes and fill the streets of Nassau with dances and lively rhythms from the Bahamian Islands. The parade ends with a competition on Bay Street, where judges award prizes to the winners in three main categories: best song, best costume and best overall group performance.

August 28th is Emancipation Day and October 12th, as in almost the entire continent, is Discovery Day.
