history
Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, the Nasa Indians lived dispersed in what is now known as Tierradentro in the Department of Cauca. Despite their strong resistance to Spanish colonization, in the middle of the 16th century the missions were established in these territories. "Since then, the Nasa have undertaken numerous struggles for their territory, competing with the Pijao, Guambiano and Guanaca. In response to colonization, in the early twentieth century, they organized an insurgency movement led by the indigenous Manuel Quintín Lame, who together with José Gonzalo Sánchez, a native of the municipality of Totoró, fought for the recovery of lost territories and for their recognition as indigenous Colombians".
