Learning Theories

Let's review the different theories that help lead the lesson planning for student goals

Behaviorism

Cognitivism

Thorndike was the initial theorist that started the movement with the three laws of learning. BF Skinner later refined the theory and created the theory of operant conditioning

Maria Montessori was a pioneering theorist in this domain of psychology

This theory centers around the gestalt theory of cognitive science

Behaviorism is the oldest learning theory and primarily focuses on understanding how to increase behaviors, or learning tasks, with incentives or punishments

2 types of memory - Long term & Short TermLong term memory exists as either procedural or semantic memory

Theorists such as Jean Piaget consider greatly the learning ability and memory at each stage of the developmental process. He defined and characterized operational stages:

Behaviorism is a theory of education that can support learners who need to repeated practice certain skills, or modify behaviors. For example, behaviorism can support teachers in practicing certain math skills and providing more rewards for students who are accurate

Constructivism

A theorist that supported this theory is Jean Piaget; John Dewey was also a strong supporter

Sensorimotor 0-2Preoperational 2-7 Concrete Operations 7-11 Formal Operations 11+

This theory is centered and focus around the assertion that the learner is the key player in the learning process, and students learn better interacting with each other more than just the teacher presenting knowledge

The theory of metacogniition demonstrates the important of memory and understanding for the students, as much or more important than the teacher's assessment of knowledge
