Thanksgiving in the 21st CenutUry

Thanksgiving in the 21st century.

Thanksgiving is celebrated on November 23. In modern day Thanksgiving, we receive our harvest from the grocery stores and often don’t know the original source of the food. We don’t rely on rain, sun and land anymore to determine how well we are going to eat next season. So, the meaning of Thanksgiving for us in the 21st century has changed quite a bit.

Thanksgiving In the 17Th century

Thanksgiving in the 17th century.

The first Thanksgiving was a harvest held by the pilgrims of Plymouth colony in the 17th century. The pilgrims held the first Thanksgiving feast to celebrate the successful fall harvest. Celebrating a fall harvest was an English tradition at the time and the pilgrims had much to celebrate. Only 53 pilgrims that were celebrating the first Thanksgiving were the only colonists to survive the long journey on the Mayflower and the problems they had encountered, that killed half of the original 102 colonists.

Similarities

Similarities

- Making long trips to see loved ones is still similar in both Thanksgivings.
- The food may be the element of the first Thanksgiving that has remained most similar over time.
- The traditional of days of feasting and celebration to thank God in times of plenty.

Differences

Differences

- Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations.
- In the 17th century, the eating lasted for three days because the Wampanoag people had to endure a two-day journey on foot to get to the feast.
- In the 21st century, we have modern transportation to help us reach our holiday destinations.
