To create a negative sentence in past simple we need:

NOUN +DID NOT/ DIDN'T+ VERB+ COMPLEMENT

WE + DIDN'T +CLAP + WHEN HE FINISHED

Sometimes we don't need a complement:

SHE + DIDN'T + CRY

Like in the negative we don't have to add -ED because DID is already in the past
