The impressive building is located in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. It is one of the largest structures made of wood in China. The emperors of the Qing and Ming dynasties used the hall to host a variety of celebrations and ceremonies. The original building was built in 1421 during the Ming dynasty and was destroyed at least seven times by fire. The last time it was rebuilt was in 1695.

Classical music and the Orchestra (1600-1700s)

The use of musical instruments and playing them in harmony has been done for hundreds of years. The Orchestra was a form of combining music in a specific harmony in certain locations to create music. By 1750, the modern symphony orchestra was created. The layout that included a variety of string, brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments helped create classical music as we know today.

Napoleon Crossing the Alps (1800)

This piece of artwork was originally painted in 1800 by an artist named Jacques-Louis David, a French painter that worked from Napoleon Bonaparte for a period. He was tasked with Public Relations and creating a positive image of Napoleon that would exclude power, authority, heroism, and accomplishment. David would often “fudge” accurate and historical details to reframe events to put a more positive and import spin on Napoleon. The painting of “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” is one of these “fudged” paintings, as Napoleon did not in fact lead his troops through the Alps on a horse, but followed them the next day on a donkey.

Spiritual music (1800s)

Spirituals, also referred to as African American spirituals or spiritual music, is a form of Christian music that was associated with the African American people, or more specifically, slaves. As slavery became a part of American history, slave “owners” would forbid the speech and even religious practices of African culture. The slaves would be not only forced to learn the English language and adapt the culture, but they were forced into Christianity as well. This from of music was born as the slaves would work to keep their spirits high during the harsh and extreme conditions in which they lived through.

The Great Mosque of Djenne (1907)

Located in present day Mali, The Great Mosque is based on a model of Muhammad’s home located in Medina. It features a walled courtyard in front of a wall that faces Mecca. It is built of sun-dried bricks and clay. Wooden poles serve as a scaffold built inside of the clay that jut out. They serve workers who must replaster the building yearly due to erosion. They also serve the purpose of decoration. It is a highly decorative aesthetic form of Islamic art and architecture.

Godzilla (1954)

Following the end of World War II, Japan’s industry and economy were destroyed. The effects of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were devastating. Godzilla was born of a remake of an American film titled “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)”. He rises from the depths of the Pacific from the hydrogen bomb testing and destroys the city of Tokyo. Godzilla also has a symbolic meaning. Godzilla stands to act as a form of protest of the hydrogen and atomic bombs.
