1. it touches on so many philosophical and moral issues

2. It's easy to identify with the character 3. In Ancient Greece, the term hypocrite (hypokrites) was used to designate the actor who wore a mask to play different characters.

So the idea presented here is that we put on a mask to hide our intentions.
