Les sciences cognitives (=neurosciences) convergent avec les sciences de l'éducation:

• L'apprentissage des correspondances graphème-phonème est la manière la plus rapide d'acquérir la lecture et la compréhension.

Nécessaire, mais pas suffisant. A cela doivent s'ajouter un enseignement de la compréhension et de la production d'écrits.

Les études ont montré que choisir entre enseigner la lecture à partir des phonèmes (=entrée phonémique) ou à partir des graphèmes (=entrée graphémique) n'avait pas d'effet significatif sur la qualité des apprentissages de la lecture.

Néanmoins, la préconisation didactique (guide orange) insiste sur l’entrée graphémique dans la lecture, c'est-à-dire de partir du graphème pour aller vers les phonèmes.

ANAGRAPH: un outil de déchiffrabilité des textes

On sait maintenant que les textes peu déchiffrables pénalisent les apprentissages, notamment ceux des élèves qui obtiennent des scores faibles ou intermédiaires à l’entrée du cours préparatoire (Goigoux (dir.), 2016). La part déchiffrable d’un texte correspond au pourcentage de graphèmes explicitement étudiés en classe. La plateforme Anagraph analyse les textes et calcule automatiquement la part déchiffrable. En outre, elle indique la valeur des graphèmes qui composent le texte et leur nombre.

Cette vidéo présente une séquence qui s'articule sur deux séances. Dans une classe de CP renforcé, des élèves en difficulté ( d'après les évaluations de début d'année ) sont confrontés à des situations d'écriture qui, les obligeant à être attentifs à la phonologie et à la structure d'un texte, leur permettent de mieux accéder à l'apprentissage de la lecture. C'est donc l'interaction écriture-lecture qui est ici travaillée.

FOCUS SUR... LA DÉMARCHE NARRAMUS

En 2013 est paru Lectorino & Lectorinette, un outil didactique dédié à l’enseignement de la compréhension de textes narratifs pour les élèves de CE1 et CE2 les moins familiers de la culture écrite. Les auteurs ont ensuite adapté cette méthode aux plus petits, en proposant Narramus, un outil très complet pour travailler les compétences narratives (comprendre et raconter) de la PS au CP.

Travailler la compréhension à partir de textes longs

4.

Le texte est choisi avec soin, les obstacles potentiels ont été identifiés ; la séquence commence par une lecture du professeur : compétence visée, compréhension d’un texte lu par l’adulte. On ne montre pas les illustrations pour na pas brouiller le message oral, le plaisir de les découvrir viendra après.Une séance d’anticipation pour les plus fragiles peut être utile : sans dévoiler le texte, on évoque le contexte, les lieux, ce qui favorisera une meilleure participation par la suite.Les élèves ont le texte en main dès la deuxième séance. La séquence compte plusieurs séances courtes, d’une quinzaine de minutes pour dégager les sens principal, identifier les personnages, les lieux, les actions, les rapports de causalité, les intentions, la chronologie du récit. Leséchanges clarifient la compréhension et constituent des objets d’expression orale. Une fois ce travail effectué, l’enseignant institutionnalise le savoir et une stratégie de compréhension transférable à tous les textes est dégagée.

L’élève qui arrive au CE1 connaît les relations graphèmes phonèmes, oralise mais peut encore hésiter et buter sur les mots. La lecture normale s’accompagne automatiquement d’une vocalisation, à voix basse chez l’enfant et intériorisée chez l’adulte.Oraliser une lecture est donc une phase indispensable, l’élève « se parle » jusqu’à ce qu’il maitrise suffisamment les mécanismes de décodage pour laisser place à la lecture silencieuse intériorisée.

COMMENT ENTRAINER LES ÉLEVES A LA LECTURE FLUIDE ?

Des phases d’entraînements, inscrites dans l’emploi du temps, alternant des temps dirigés par L’enseignant et des temps en autonomie, sont proposées aux élèves. Certaines activités aident l’élève à se détacher du décodage pour identifier aisément et rapidement les mots, comme celles qui s’appuient sur des listes analogiques de mots, avec une partie commune(ex : mots de la même famille comme voyager, voyageur, voyageuse, mots qui riment praline, tartine, sardine, des mots de plus en plus longs pour développer l’empan visuel. Ces mots sont repris ensuite dans des phrases pour conforter leur identification directe en contexte).

Autres activités développant l’identification rapide en groupe : des étiquettes-mots éparpillées sur la table, un élève lit un des mots, le premier qui le pointe du doigt le plus rapidement continue le jeu.Ces listes sont à demeure en fond de classe. Les élèves s’entraînent régulièrement et parfois en se chronométrant. Des diaporamas de ces mots peuvent être projetés, variant le minutage. Sans projecteur, l’enseignant peut cacher les mots donnés à lire au tableau, toujours pour entraîner à l’identification rapide.

COMMENT ENTRAINER LES ÉLEVES A LA LECTURE FLUIDE ?

D’autres activités consistent à transformer des mots à l’aide d’un indice. La lecture de mots comprenant des occurrences identiques favorise la mise en mémoire. Exemple : Il navigue sur la mer / le marin Ce n’est pas l’après-midi / le matin.

LIRE AVEC AISANCE EN RESPECTANT UN RYTHME NATUREL

Pour respecter le rythme imposé d’une lecture, les séances spécifiques visant le repérage des groupes de sens ou groupes de souffle sont à organiser.Exemple : l’enseignant lit à haute voix un texte écrit ou projeté au tableau. Travail de repérage des signes de ponctuation, des groupes de souffle ; s’ensuit un entraînement de lecture par les élèves, seul ou à deux. Des élèves relisent à haute voix, on valide ou non, on marque les groupes de souffle à l’aide de barres obliques. Pour des élèves plus en difficulté, on peut présenter les groupes de sens, unités de sens, sur des lignes différentes, avant de recommencer la lecture complète de la phrase avec fluidité.Exemple : Chaque matin, le fermier se lève tôt pour sortir les vaches de l’étable.

Autre exemple d’entraînement : Des codes couleur peuvent être utilisés pour identifier les groupes déjà rencontrés. Exemple: La grand-mère sort. La grand-mère sort de la maison. La grand-mère sort de la maison et ouvre le courrier. Les liaisons doivent être repérées pour participer à la fluence.

LIRE AVEC UNE INTONATION ADAPTÉE EN AIDANT LES ÉLEVES A RESPECTER LA PONCTUATION

L’intonation dynamise la lecture et renforce l’accès au sens. Elle suppose le respect de la ponctuation. On peut utiliser un codage avec des flèches (montante, descendante, ou en suspens, pour marquer la pause). On peut aussi travailler la lecture de paires de phrases dont la ponctuation change le sens.Exemples :- Il commande une glace au café.- Il commande une glace, au café.- Le professeur dit : « l’élève est en retard ».- Le professeur, dit l’élève, est en retard.Et le célèbre :- On mange, les enfants !- On mange les enfants.

Proposer un modèle de lecture fluide et animer une discussion sur le processus:Il convient en effet de présenter le modèle vers lequel on veut tendre, d’où les questionnements (que procure l’effet de la pause sur ce mot ? et l’insistance sur celui-ci ? et le rythme lent sur ce passage…). Les contre-exemples peuvent aussi permettre de mieux saisir les attendus. Un codage du texte au tableau est conseillé. In fine, quelles intonations de la voix, quels mots accentuer ?

2. Inviter les élèves à répéter leur lecture:Les relectures améliorent la maitrise, la fluidité, la confiance en soi et le plaisir. Les différentes lectures possibles sont : la lecture à l’unisson (lecture en choeur, après préparation), la lecture en écho (chaque phrase est répétée après la lecture par un élève ou le professeur), la lecture orchestrée (partage du texte entre plusieurs élèves), ou la lecture en cascade (un élève lit la première phrase, puis d’autres se joignent à lui pour la seconde, et d’autres encore pour la suite jusqu’à ce que la classe entière lise).

3. Permettre à l’élève de s’entraîner seul :Ce temps de préparation individuel est nécessaire. L’utilisation d’un petit tube en plastique peut favoriser la concentration de l’élève sur sa voix, sans parasitage. 4. Inviter les élèves à présenter leur lecture:La lecture à l’ensemble de la classe peut présenter un intérêt pour l’élève s’il s’est entraîné, seul ou à plusieurs, et s’engage dans une situation réelle de communication (lire ou relire un texte qu’il a aimé, par exemple).

S’ENTRAÎNER À LIRE AVEC FLUIDITÉ UN TEXTE SUR LA SEMAINE

Répartir le travail sur la semaine:Présenter et lire le texte à voix haute (enseignant), découvrir et s’approprier le texte (élève), entraînements pour surmonter les obstacles, travail guidé sur la compréhension et le lexique, entraînement à l’identification de tous les mots, repérage des groupes de souffle, de la ponctuation, entraînements aux différentes formes de lecture (unisson, écho, individuelle, orchestrée), régulations avec l’enseignant, évaluation de la prestation. L’organisation repose sur des séances courtes et fréquentes, proposées à des petits groupes. Le professeur travaille avec un groupe de niveau homogène de 4, les autres travaillent en autonomie.

LA LECTURE EXPRESSIVE

L’élève est motivé par l’envie de se faire comprendre et de soulever des réactions. Véritable enjeu de communication, la lecture expressive implique que l’élève prélève des indices pour concevoir unprojet d’interprétation personnelle. Véritable acculturation à l’écrit, l’élève s’imprègne de structures syntaxiques, de tournures lexicales en tenant compte de l’articulation, débit, hauteur, intensité, rythme, intonation.Comment travailler l’expressivité ?L’expression des sentiments peut être travaillée à travers la lecture d’une phrase sur des tons différents (La porte d’entrée est restée ouverte toute la nuit, et personne ne l’a remarquée / tonamusé, inquiet, en colère…). On peut varier la hauteur de sa voix (voix de souris, voix de monstre), tirage au sort de ces différentes propositions, s’appuyer sur les dialogues, les phrases peuvent être classées dans un tableau en fonction des intonations retenues.

LA LECTURE EXPRESSIVE

Une phrase, une formule, une maxime, une comptine ou un petit poème inventé pour "faire tourner la langue", et se tromper en le répétant, éventuellement de plus en plus vite. Il présente une ou plusieurs difficultés phonétiques particulières. C'est un néologisme et un calque de l'anglais tongue twister (qui fait "tordre la langue").

Il est nécessaire de proposer des temps d’entraînements et de régulations fréquents pour dépasser les obstacles et faire progresser. L’enregistrement peut aider l’élève à s’autoévaluer et à identifier les pistes de progrès. L’utilisation du chronomètre est une façon objective de mesurer les progrès relatifs à la fluence (nombre de mots lus dans un temps donné). Une courbe peut illustrer la progression. La feuille de suivi peut aussi comporter les hésitations, erreurs, retours en arrière, ponctuation non respectée….

La plupart des Espaces Numériques de Travail (ENT) disposent d'une fonctionnalité blog. Celle-ci est particulièrement adaptée pour proposer aux élèves de participer à un club-lecture numérique. Sur des moments collectifs, ou lors de temps d'autonomie, chacun peut alors proposer un livre qu'il a apprécié, lire les conseils des camarades voire commenter les autres articles.

L'organisation d'un club de lecture repose sur les principes suivants: il suppose tout d'abord que tous les élèves de la classe lisent le même livre, généralement en plusieurs étapes. Un rallye-lecture fonctionne sur la dynamique d’un challenge dont le but est de faire lire un certain nombre de livres aux élèves en un temps imparti. Chaque jour, l'établissement scolaire banalise un temps de lecture d’environ 15 minutes. Ce temps quotidien et personnel est partagé collectivement par l'ensemble de la communauté éducative.
